More butterflies! Plus the first record of a King Swallowtail for my town. 😊
A photo of a Red Admiral butterfly on a purple field thistle. The butterfly is mostly dark brown and black with a smattering of reds and whites. A crisp photo of a Question Mark butterfly, named for a white "?" mark on the underside of its wings (which is not visible in this image). Instead, its wings are bright orange, fading to dark red and white along the edge, ending in two little tails. Its wings are decorated with bold black spots. It is sitting on a highly invasive plant with triangular leaves but shhhhhh enjoy the butterfly. A slightly blurry photo of an Eastern King Swallowtail (a.k.a. Giant Swallowtail) butterfly on a poofy purple field thistle. The butterfly's body is yellow, and its wings are black criss-crossed with yellow markings. The hindwing marks invoke the idea of an old map of a river. King Swallowtails are "locally common," which means they're easy to find in specific parks but relatively rare to find elsewhere.

Today, I went on a @lostriversto.bsky.social walk in the Meadoway, and it was an inspiring experience. But also - I saw an indigo bunting! Not in the woods, but out in the open in a sea of goldenrod and other late summer wildflowers and grasses. A day with an indigo bunting is a very good day.
A double sign on a post in a cluster of goldenrod alerts readers to the important project underfoot. Text reads:
“The Meadoway
COMMUNITY POWERED GREEN SPACES
This area has been planted with native wildflowers and grasses.
Patience is critical for the success of any meadow. You can expect to see beautiful wildflowers in the summer and tall each year. Meadows are a vital component of our natural landscape as they provide food and shelter particularly for birds and butterflies. Maintenance mowing will occur every 3-4 years.
Meadow Restoration” (title above an illustration of meadow plants above ground and their deep roots in the soil)
On the smaller sign below that one, text reads:
“ATTENTION This is a no mow area.”
