As much as Ferdinand was looking forward to the festivities of the Day of Devotion, what he cherished the most was the opportunity to spend time alone with Edelgard. He managed to reserve a private room so they could share a nice meal in peace.

The vivid scarlet of Edelgard’s dress, fittingly adorned with the Adrestian double-headed eagle on her chest, made Ferdinand feel underdressed in his red suit with blue and gold accents. Considering how beautiful she looked, he was fine letting her surpass him in this instance.

Ferdinand, having already finished his meal, watched Edelgard take her last bites of her vegetable stir fry. He mirrored her content smile. She dabbed the corner of her mouth with her napkin.

Ferdinand drank the remainder of his wine and set down the glass with a smile. “What a lovely meal.”

“Indeed. Do you have room for dessert?” Not many people knew about Edelgard’s sweet tooth, one of the many things Ferdinand found adorable about her.

“Of course, we’ll share the saghert and cream.” It was fortunate that Ferdinand and Edelgard shared many favorite dishes. Unlike a certain picky retainer of hers who had more disliked foods than ones he enjoyed.

“Looks like we need a refill,” Edelgard said, glancing at her own empty glass.

As if on cue, the door burst open. A figure dressed in a black suit with gold trim and a matching feathered hat appeared. Pauldrons the size of dinner plates sat on either shoulder. A sword embellished with a blue flower sat at the wielder’s left hip. In one hand was a pair of red carnations tied with a lavender ribbon identical to the ones Edelgard wore in her hair. The other hand was balancing a tray with two glasses with narrow mouths and rounded bowls. The fact this person managed to make such a dramatic entrance without dropping the bottle or glasses was rather impressive.

“Say no more, my lady,” came a voice. Familiar, but certainly not the one he expected.

Hubert?!

Under any other circumstance, Ferdinand would be perturbed that Hubert interrupted their date. However, given his uncharacteristically theatrical outfit, Ferdinand found it utterly hilarious. He tried to mask his laughter with a cough. Edelgard must have found it similarly funny, judging by how she hid her smirk behind one of her hands.

Hubert moved the glasses from his tray to the table. Whether he was oblivious to Ferdinand and Edelgard’s reactions or choosing to instead focus on the task at hand, Ferdinand did not know. After removing the cork from the blue ribbon-adorned bottle, Hubert poured a violet liquid into the glasses. If he wasn’t also serving Edelgard, Ferdinand would think Hubert was trying to poison him.

“Hubert, what in the world are you wearing?” Edelgard asked, sounding equal parts perplexed and amused.

“I am merely dressed for the Day of Devotion as you are, my lady,” Hubert said nonchalantly. He added the carnations he was holding to the vase of flowers at the center of the table.

After hearing Ferdinand attempt to stifle a chuckle, Hubert glared at him with icy pale green eyes. “Do you find this garb humorous, Ferdinand? I thought you of all people would appreciate such elaborate craftsmanship.”

Ferdinand didn’t dare to look directly at Hubert, lest he want to burst into uncontrollable laughter and likely be impaled by a flurry of Dark Spikes. Any admiration he had for the outfit was superseded by the pure hilarity of Hubert wearing it.

“The intricate details are certainly admirable,” Ferdinand replied evenly. “Did Dorothea ask you to play a supporting role in one of her operas?”

Hubert scoffed, as if the suggestion was somehow more ridiculous than his garish outfit. “I am not here to regale you with stories about my clothing. Since I have replenished your beverages, I will be taking my leave.”

Hubert bowed before Edelgard and shot one more venomous glare at Ferdinand. The way the door quietly closed behind him sharply contrasted his grandiose entrance.

There was a beat of silence as Ferdinand and Edelgard’s eyes drifted away from the door back to each other. They both erupted into a fit of laughter, the kind that made their faces and sides ache as tears wells up in their eyes. Never did he think Hubert would be the one to make them both laugh so hard. They were treated to dinner and a show, and plenty of festivities had yet to come.

Hubert and Ferdinand are riding horses together while the sun is fixing to set. Ferdinand is riding in front and looking back at Hubert who is riding behind as his horse trots forward. Ferdinand has his hair tied back in a ponytail.

Hubert is on the ground, knocked off by his horse. Ferdinand is extending his hands to lift Hubert back onto his feet. They're smiling at the other.

Ferdinand is up close, patting Hubert down, to ensure he's okay. It seems more like an excuse to touch him though. Hubert's a little flustered by this but he lets Ferdinand do this, looking down at him curiously.

The sun is setting. From behind, we see that Hubert and Ferdinand are walking towards a large home in the distance with Ferdinand's arm hooked around Hubert's. Hubert lightly touches his head with his free hand and Ferdinand smiles at him.
