My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

The EU is inviting the Taliban to Brussels. Europe’s credibility lies in tatters
As ICE-style deportation rules come into force, the unsavoury circle the EU wants migrant deals with includes the Afghan regime. This is a nadir, says Shada Islam, a Brussels-based commentator on EU a...

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe was born #OTD in 1915. The original #soul sister & "Godmother of Rock & Roll" influenced Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis. 😮 Great balls of fire! #WomensHistoryMonth #musichistory
A classic black-and-white photograph of Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1973), the pioneering gospel singer, guitarist, and "Godmother of Rock 'n' Roll." Captured mid-performance in a nightclub or studio setting (likely 1940s–1950s), she leans into a vintage microphone with a radiant, joyful smile—eyes sparkling upward in ecstasy, mouth open wide in song or laughter, conveying pure passion and energy. Her dark hair is styled in elegant curls with a small decorative bow or flower accent. She wears a light-colored dress with voluminous, sheer puffed sleeves, a high neckline, and a large bow at the neck, giving her an elegant yet exuberant stage presence. In her hands she cradles a white guitar, fingers poised on the fretboard as she plays. The background shows a draped curtain and soft stage lighting, emphasizing her dynamic pose and the fusion of sacred gospel with secular rhythm that defined her groundbreaking career. This iconic image captures Tharpe's revolutionary influence—blending gospel with early rock 'n' roll guitar techniques, influencing artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, and becoming one of the first major Black female stars to cross over into mainstream popularity while remaining rooted in her faith.

This is an excellent piece by @ekwilson.bsky.social. There is no easy separation of religion and politics in what happened at Bondi and no one is served by thinking there is.

Lack of Religious literacy remains a huge challenge. We need “Lived religions" literacy, that engages and understanda what "religion" is and looks like at the grassroots Unless we change our underlying assumptions, we will continue to get religion wrong.

Is #religion violent or peaceful? Is the #Taliban a religious or political organisation? Is the #Ukraine conflict about religion? These are the wrong questions to ask. My latest book explains why, and it’s free for anyone to read here. www.taylorfrancis.com/books/oa-mon...
