In 2023 while in NOLA, a Lyft Driver and I had a conversation about leaving home. It led to him telling me about his terminal diagnosis. “An editor told me once that if you want to understand a war, interview the grave diggers. I’d add that if you want to understand a city, interview the drivers.”

A phenomenon I've noticed recently is people trying to occupy some untenable middleground wrt to the use of systems sold as "AI" -- this is a position where people try to recognize the harms of this tech but also hold space for "responsible" or "ethical" use. 🧵>>

In college I was part of a club none of us wanted to be in. Special Survivors was for students who had had a close relative die. We didn't have mental health services, and we didn't have tools to manage our grief. Instead, we sat in a dorm room once a month or so and shared our sad stories.

Also let me recommend historian Annette Gordon Reed’s “On Juneteenth” for your summer reading list. I felt vindicated reading that Reed, a Texan, always saw Juneteenth as a Texas celebration. Her dive into the complicated history of Texas, slavery, integration & this holiday is riveting.

It’s Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Island & issued General Order No. 3. It announced that “all slaves are free.” This story of this one event was commemorated through the diaspora of Black Americans for more than 150 years before becoming a national holiday.

“Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied. The enslaved people of Texas had to wait 30 months to learn what the rest of the nation already knew. Black women in Texas are still waiting.”

For Black Women in Texas, Juneteenth’s Promise of Freedom Remains Unrealized
State control over reproduction in Texas didn't end with slavery in 1865. Today’s draconian abortion laws and bounty hunts keep Black women in reproductive enslavement.

Black text on white page that reads as follows:

On June 19, 1865, African American communities in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from slavery — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

For 161 years, Juneteenth has been a day of remembrance for the freedom that was delayed. It is also a celebration of the joy and resilience that flourished despite that delay.

The contributions of African Americans, whose struggle for freedom shaped our nation, are immeasurable. Yet too many Black families continue to bear the brunt of an affordability crisis that has pushed them out of the neighborhoods and communities they've built.

True freedom has a tangible impact on daily life: the ability to afford housing, earn a living wage, put food on the table, support a family, and create a future for generations to come.

As we celebrate today, we must recommit ourselves to ensuring this freedom is fully realized.

Happy Juneteenth, New York City.

I'm currently reading "Blue Nights" by Joan Didion. A heartbreaker with some funny passages, including this one:
I find, on the other hand, somewhat to my surprise, that I actively like physical therapy. I keep regular appointments at a Columbia Presbyterian sports medicine facility at Sixtieth and Madison. I am impressedby the strength and general tone of the other patients who turn up during the same hour. I study their balance, their proficiency with the various devices recommended by the therapist. The more I watch, the more encouraged I am: this stuff really works, I tell myself. The thought makes me cheerful, optimistic. I wonder how many appointments it will take to reach the apparently effortless control already achieved by my fellow patients. Only during my third week of physical therapy do I learn that these particular fellow patients are in fact the New York Yankees, loosening up between game days.

ICE has violated almost 100 court orders. Let me say that another way. 100 times ICE was caught brazenly ignoring the law. 100 times a court told them to immediately stop. And 100 times they ignored the order. That's an out-of-control agency that shouldn't get another dime.

Charlie Hallowell, the chef behind several East Bay restaurants, publicly apologized after allegations of sexual harassment erupted in 2017. He admitted to the majority of the allegations(opens in new tab), stepped away from his businesses for two years without pay and underwent extensive therapy and reflection, according to Donna Insalaco, Hallowell’s business partner, whom he brought in post-allegations. “I have personally seen his growth, his ongoing work to repair trust, and his commitment to building a more inclusive and accountable workplace,” Insalaco told The Standard, adding that the majority of the managers at Hallowell’s restaurants are now women.
