6/ The fun part: one mouse on day 10, doing what we call circling. We reconstructed the kinematics in 3D. Centripetal acceleration oscillated and occasionally exceeded 1g. A mouse running for fun, briefly making its own gravity. Maybe @talmo.bsky.social can post the video....
Two-panel figure from the preprint. Left (a): a still frame from inside the ISS rodent habitat showing the metal-grid cage interior with a colored loop traced through the air, mapping the path of a mouse running laps along the cage walls; the loop is colormapped in rainbow colors to indicate orbit phase. Right (b): the same trajectory reconstructed in 3D, plotted as a tilted oval ribbon of points colored across the rainbow spectrum, with axes labeled in centimeters showing the mouse's centroid path through the cage volume. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.04.30.721950v1

4/ Pose tracking matched human inter-annotator variability. Behavior classification across 8 categories hit 0.86–0.90 accuracy. Per-behavior performance was uneven, so we treat the patterns as qualitative trends, not precise counts.
Behavioral ethogram across the full 37-day RR-1 mission. Two stacked panels show, top, human-labeled behaviors and, bottom, model-predicted behaviors. Each row corresponds to one of eight behaviors: huddling, grooming, eating, drifting, crawling, circling, background, and backflips. Colored tick marks run along the horizontal time axis wherever a behavior occurred, with each behavior assigned its own color. Below both panels, a thin bar shows the light-dark cycle as alternating yellow (light) and dark blue (dark) blocks across days 0 through 32. The model panel shows denser, more continuous predictions than the human labels, with eating, crawling, and circling becoming visibly more frequent as the mission progresses.

6/🧵 Fig 1 in our review shows the field landscape. ~40 reward engram studies across 20 years, spread across PFC, NAc, amygdala, striatum, VTA, and hippocampus. Gold triangles are papers that look at both fear AND reward in the same region. Notice how few there are in the DG.
Schematic showing a mouse brain from two angles with red circles marking brain regions where reward engrams have been studied. Each region has a list of published papers next to it. Prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens have the longest lists. The dentate gyrus list is almost entirely gold triangles, meaning those papers studied both fear and reward rather than reward alone. Blue squares are reward-only papers. The imbalance is visible at a glance. This is Fig 1 in our open access review - come read the whole thing! https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13000687/

New 5.5/🧵 Here’s this point made in the graphical abstract for the review: what we know about fear engrams (left side) vs reward engrams (right side) in the DG. Right side: lots more question marks….consolidation, retrieval, extinction in the DG for reward? Largely unknown.
Side-by-side comparison of what we know about fear versus reward engrams in the dentate gyrus. The left column lists fear engram principles (allocation, consolidation, retrieval, extinction, and identity versus valence encoding) with established mechanisms noted for each. The right column lists the same categories for reward engrams, but most are marked with question marks and labeled as largely unknown, unclear, or unresolved. A zoomed-in illustration of the dentate gyrus granule cell layer with engram cells sits in the center. The bottom panel states our review’s central argument: fear engrams revealed the mechanistic principles, reward engrams remain the critical frontier. This is the graphical abstract for our open access review - come read the whole thing! https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13000687/

Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers hockey mascot winding up to throw a cake at a person in the foreground. She stands with her back to us, arms akimbo. We can only see Gritty’s right eye, his hockey helmet, and part of his bright orange jersey. The sky behind him is bright blue and there is a crowd surrounding the spectacle. 1/3Gritty rises up as he begins to take his swing, cake in hand. His right eye is higher and more obvious that in prior picture. The volunteer/victim in the foreground remains arms akimbo. 2/3The cake has been thrown at the face of the volunteer/victim. She remains with arms akimbo, but the frosting wraps around one side of her head and chunks of cake wrap around the other. Gritty’s right eye is visible and focused on his target. 3/3.

On the large projection screen, there's a slide titled "Publications are the foundation of science" with a brick wall image on the right side credited to "Ivan Radic, www.Flickr.com". The slide lists four bullet points about science:

• builds upon science
• is about finding the truth
• is built on trust
• is not immune to fraud

The image from a Philadelphia Inquirer news article shows a protest rally in Philadelphia with a group of people holding signs. One prominent sign reads "NIH GRANTS bring PA $5.23 BILLION in ECONOMIC ACTIVITY." Another visible sign says "FUND DON'T FREEZE." The header at the top reads "PHILADELPHIA" and the headline below the image states "Penn unions rally to encourage administration to oppose federal funding cuts, canceling of diversity initiatives." A partial subheading is visible mentioning that "Penn unions delivered a petition." The protesters are advocating for continued federal research funding and against cuts to diversity programs at the University of Pennsylvania.

Science is defiance! This afternoon at PUREL (Penn Undergrad Research in the Eisch Lab) students gave a great presentation on this 2024 paper by Schuler et al. from @rcbagot.bsky.social lab. #MoSeq 1/3
A screen capture of the title and authors list for this scientific paper: "Data-Driven Analysis Identifies Novel Modulation of Social Behavior in Female Mice Witnessing Chronic Social Defeat Stress"
Below the title is a list of authors:
Heike Schuler, Rand S. Eid, Serena Wu, Yiu-Chung Tse, Vedrana Cvetkovska, Joëlle Lopez, Rosalie Quinn, Delong Zhou, Juliet Meccia, Laurence Dion-Albert, Shannon N. Bennett, Emily L. Newman, Brian C. Trainor, Catherine J. Peña, Caroline Menard, and Rosemary C. Bagot
Want to look up this paper? Here is the full citation: Schuler H, Eid RS, Wu S, Tse YC, Cvetkovska V, Lopez J, Quinn R, Zhou D, Meccia J, Dion-Albert L, Bennett SN. Data-driven analysis identifies novel modulation of social behavior in female mice witnessing chronic social defeat stress. Biological psychiatry. 2024 Dec 3. PMID: 39638223 DOI: 10.1016/j.biopsych.2024.11.017 The image, from Schuler et al., 2024, shows a schematic labeled "Figure 1A" illustrating experimental procedures for studying chronic social stress in mice.
Top panel ("Chronic Social Witness / Defeat Stress"):
The image depicts a test chamber divided by a dashed line. On the left side, a white mouse (marked with a male symbol ♂) is shown on top of a black mouse (also marked with a male symbol ♂), demonstrating social defeat interaction. On the right side, a smaller brown mouse (marked with a female symbol ♀) is positioned as an observer, representing the "witness" condition.
Bottom panel ("Social Interaction Test"):
Two test configurations are shown:

"No Target Trial": A test arena with a mouse in the center and an empty enclosure (shown as a dashed outline) in the "Interaction Zone" (dark gray U-shaped area)
"Target Trial": The same arena but with a target mouse present in the enclosure within the "Interaction Zone"

The legend indicates "Interaction Zone" (dark gray) and "Corner Zone" (light gray), which are designated areas for measuring social behavior. The design allows researchers to compare how mice that either directly experienced defeat stress or witnessed it respond to social interaction opportunities, measuring their approach or avoidance behaviors in relation to a target mouse.

Executive committee reviewing your request to leave the couch #TimelineCleanse #TuxieTrio #CatsOfBlueSky #WhoRescuedWho
Our three rescued tuxedo cat siblings from West Philadelphia lounge on top of me (back tap) and on a floral quilt (front one). Lionel sits upright in a perfect loaf position in the foreground, while two more (Hermione and Sabrina/Beans) relax behind them with identical black/grey and white markings. All three cats have alert expressions with bright eyes looking directly at the camera. A glass of water and phone are visible on a side table in the background. My head and eyeglasses are just barely visible on the upper left corner of the picture.

Hermione, one of our three west Philly alley rescue sibling, requests an appraisal for cuteness level.
The face of a black and white tuxedo cat. Her ears are black as is the mask around her eyes. Her nose is white as are her lower cheeks and her neck. She is relaxing in a dark blue cat bed. Her yellow eyes make direct contact with the camera. Her cheek and eyebrow whiskers are white and spread out a bit like fireworks.
