Ai and the growing link to conflict minerals in the DRC globalwitness.org/en/campaigns...

Conflict coltan, AI demand and the risk of runaway harm
Conflict coltan from DRC is already finding its way into electronic devices, and accelerated AI and data centre demand could add pressure to creaking regulation

Copper is facing a poli-crisis that could soon lead to shortages, just as the world looks towards electrification and quadrupling the need for this essential resource. Read my new analysis here globalwitness.org/en/campaigns...

Copper could be undoing of COP31 electrification push
Copper will be essential to the world’s decarbonisation plans, but is there enough of it to go around? We examine this emerging threat to electrification

The Santa Marta conference on phasing out fossil fuels starts next week. But what does it mean for the COP process? Who will be there? And what should we be fighting for? Read our new @globalwitness.org explainer here globalwitness.org/en/campaigns...

After COP30, what’s next for the fossil fuel phaseout?
After COP30 stalled on fossil fuel phaseout, the Santa Marta conference aims to turn climate pledges into real action on polluter power and the just transition

We’ve written to Dutch & Colombian ministers thanking them for convening the Santa Marta Conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels. We support the UNFCCC process, but warn fossil fuel interests still distort it. Santa Marta must ensure balance and safe space for communities.

As the global race for minerals hots up, standards for the mining and processing of these materials have been popping up everywhere. So what does a truly credible standard look like? And how can voluntary standards help fill gaps when regulation isn’t up to it? globalwitness.org/en/campaigns...
globalwitness.org
What do strong voluntary mining standards look like?
Voluntary standards can drive responsible mineral mining if mandatory regulation is limited or state enforcement is weak – so long as certain conditions are met

Global Witness signed this letter condemning the unconscionable decision by the US to use the withdrawal of lifesaving medicine as a lever for a minerals trade deal. It’s not ‘woke’ to believe in human life and dignity.

The ‘we need to rethink our approach to the North Sea’ is dumbest conversation in UK politics Expensive to extract- much of it now owned by small producers - that goes into global market Good to jobs in Aberdeen, not much else *mad* we’re not talking about energy security + renewables every day

This whole thread is phenomenal, but this slide in particular stood out as the silver lining. The countries that will make it through this crisis relatively unscathed will be those who invested in renewables.

If you haven’t already watched the new documentary from Louis Theroux on the manosphere, make sure you do well out of reach of anything you might throw at the television. Equal parts terrifying and pathetic. The hatred of women wrapped into a pyramid scheme, reducing young men to their base needs.

Fossil fuels are exacerbating the cost of living crisis. The best time to have heavily invested in efficiency and renewables was two decades ago. The next best time is now.

Critical minerals: The one issue COP has forgotten about
To reverse the climate crisis, COP30 must address the unforeseen consequences of the critical mineral boom, which is adding more deforestation and CO2 emissions
