This is an excellent article by Leif Wetherby - why AI is a cultural technology not a collection of human-like agents (citing our work on this). And why the anthropomorphism is a distraction from the very real risks and dangers and the way to deal with them. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/o...

If we want to figure out the proper way to control A.I. models, we need to recognize what they really are.

Ramulus is one of 1,800 people over the age of 55 serving life sentences in NC prisons--my friend Michelle is another. This is a beautiful illustration of the need for common-sense clemency practices that can respond to all that changes in the decades after a crime. boltsmag.org/north-caroli...

I heard audible gasps in Crim Pro last year when I shared that a DOJ official in 2018 estimated that police kill 10,000 dogs per year (which averages ~27 dogs per day). Easy to imagine how unannounced officers at wrong addresses could compound the problem. scholars.unh.edu/unh_lr/vol17...

A big surprise of Chatrie: Kavanaugh provides the 5th vote for a broad privacy-based reading of the Fourth Amendment, extending Carpenter. So we get a Kagan majority with Roberts, Kavanaugh, Sotomayor, and Jackson, taking a broad view of Carpenter. Gorsuch is a 6th vote, but on property grounds.

I set this spring's criminal law exam loosely in @aptshadow.bsky.social's City of Last Chances. It was a joy to read through the 64 sixteen-page responses, even if they were less forgiving of Lemya's antics than I expected. Stirring opposition to Correct Conduct in the policy Q answers!
Text reading: In place of the existing criminal code, with its overlapping and confusing MPC and state-specific provisions, which could be interpreted differently by different courts, the Palleseen majority leader
proposes the following bill to the legislature:
Il.C.S. 1: All willful violations of Correct Conduct (defined as the collection infra of Il.C.S. 2 through Il.C.S. 3991) shall be considered felonies, punishable by a minimum of 6 months of supervision, up to a maximum of death.
[Il.C.S. 2 through 3991 list the existing administrative, civil, and criminal regulations governing behavior in Ilmar, including laws about permissible domestic animals, laws prohibiting interpersonal violence, and laws prohibiting graduate instruction on forbidden subjects.]
You are the legislature’s ombudsman: an independent, appointed advisor belonging to neither party, empowered to recommend changes to proposed laws before they go to the floor for a vote. Please
assess whether the proposed law achieves its goals, what objections you would anticipate from either the Palleseen or minority parties, and whether there are changes to the proposed statute that might improve it substantively and/or improve its chances of passage.

Just a reminder of my favorite idea for a law student note: Pick an important Supreme Court case from 5-10 years ago, and see how lower courts are interpreting it. It's helpful for practitioners and courts, and something law students can research and present effectively.

The weekly free 5m calls are also interrupted by automated messages and reminders that time is almost up. Trying to collaborate on writing a piece with someone inside in NC has been surprisingly expensive for both of us (even the $0.25 text messages)--I can't imagine how I'd feel as a family member.
