I'm working on a proofread that will turn into a copyedit after I speak with the executive director of the group and the author. Unfortunately, whoever copyedited it before left in a ton of inconsistencies and redundancies. Luckily they're willing to adjust the scope of the project.

Is this your first cozy? I'd love to write one myself, but I'm at the stage of scribbling whatever ideas come to mind. Congratulations!

Don't just consider an editor's rates. Consider what they do, how they work, if they work with your novel's genre. Ask questions. Converse with them to see if you mesh. Get a sample edit to see if it's what you need. You won't be saving money if you hire someone who's wrong for your novel.

Welcome, I'm a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. I love reading mysteries (and would love to edit them.) I love puzzles and have two guinea pigs.

I haven't had the chance, personally, to work with Vert, but everything I've heard of him has been exemplary. So, friends, need a freelance editor and formatter with excellent skills? 👇

No real writer uses AI to write for them. No real editor uses AI to edit for them. Maybe tell him he must love AI also. All those robots can come in and do the examinations for him.

It's a challenge cutting down the words to fit into Bluesky. Jen and Al were originally Judy and Anthony. Anyway, I'll give the second reason the next time I post on here. And, if you want to read more, check out my blog: eileensproofreading.com/f/when-to-us...

When to Use a Comma: So, Because, and As
As we all know, commas can be tricky, mysterious little things. I know I’m not the only one who’s stared at a sentence for several minutes, trying to decide if a comma would make it clearer.

One reason to put a comma before "because": You have an independent clause involving a negative. "Jen didn’t cook fish because Al was visiting." Jen cooked fish but not because of Al. "Jen didn’t cook fish, because Al was visiting." Jen didn’t cook fish, as Al was allergic. #copyeditor

They can be nasty at times, especially when it's difficult to determine if one is needed.

When do you use a comma before "so," "because," and "as"? A comma clarifies the intended meaning of certain words in a sentence. I talk about this in my latest blog. Let me know what you think. #GrammarTips #WritingCommunity #Proofreader #CopyEditor eileensproofreading.com/blog/f/when-...

Hi, I'm attending the ACES VCON26. I remember there being a room where our avatars could walk around and speak with each other last year. But I'm not finding it anywhere on Whova. Did they get rid of it?

Typos pop up on my posts even after I'm sure I caught them all. One year? You're doing something right. What I'm learning is that it takes time to get clients, I need to stop fearing cold pitching if I ever want clients, and I have so much more to learn.

I have a website, blog, and newsletter. I post without using AI. I'm trying to gain more experience. One thing I'm not confident with is cold pitching, especially in emails because I don't want to be spammy. I'll only DM on LI, I don't know if it's okay to do on here.

Jigsaw puzzles! I don't know how many of those I want to get done. I'm more into the activity than the results. I also would love to get just one editing client by the end of the year. Ah well, I'll keep working toward it.

Quick reminder If you can replace "so" with "so that," omit the comma. Reggie leaned in closer so she could hear the gossip. If you can replace "so" with "therefore," add a comma. Reggie needed to learn more, so she leaned in closer to hear the gossip. Any questions? #proofreading #copyediting

I'm a copyeditor and proofreader, so that's not something I should suggest. But I think the writing should only be expanded by adding new, pertinent information, especially if that information improves the story.
110
Eileen Pizzi @eileen-pizzi.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Exactly! Filler words, redundancies, and overly described routine activities can bloat a story. Eliminate the words that add nothing and change routine scenes like driving to a destination from showing to telling. But what if the author needs to reach a certain word count?
110
Eileen Pizzi @eileen-pizzi.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Your author really surprised you. That means they'll surprise their readers, and in a good way from what it seems.

Great tips. My own block comes from me not making myself sit and just write. I don't have an idea for a story yet, so I set my alarm for the same time each day and make myself write for at least a half hour. Today is day three.

One thing I learned this year is that words like crazy or insane may seem harmless to most, but if someone's dealing with mental illness, such words can hurt and should be used with care or avoided. Bigotry is a choice, not a mental illness. But the bigot could have a separate mental illness.

Copyediting comes before proofreading. As your copyeditor, I correct grammatical and punctuation errors, catch inconsistencies, improve clarity and conciseness, and check basic facts. As your proofreader, I correct any remaining errors and typos. Read below to learn more. ⚡📚💙

The Seven Dials Mystery is my favorite of Christie's novels. I keep meaning to check out Netflix's adaptation, but I fear it may not be true to the original story.

Sunday, I turned 60. We celebrated by eating out (lasagna), walking in Atlantic Highlands, and having tiramisu at home. Jim gave me a squishmallow. I’m extending that celebration to you. Discount-offer details are in the comments. Message me if you are interested or have any questions. 💙📚⚡
Me with a squishmallow pressed to my left cheek. It looks like a cinnamon roll with two black eyes. I have reddish glasses, brown hair, and a yellow shirt.

Well, that's a pretty strong signal to not hire them. Having typos on posts is one thing. I see it with a lot of well-established copyeditors, because we're only human. But in an ad that's supposedly been focused on? Nah.

Tightening up sentences really make the story move forward. Also, look out for any dialogue or action that are routine and don't add to the story. That's where you can "tell" rather than "show." Rather than spending two paragraphs on how someone packed for a trip, just write that they packed.

The copyediting fiction courses both at the EFA and ClubEd, and the introductory editing course at ACES. I began the working with independent authors course at the EFA and the beginning course for developmental editing at ClubEd, but froze at both. I'm best with instructor-led courses. #StetChat

Compared to me, you're young. I left teaching thirteen years ago, and I quit working in group homes almost two years ago. I spend my time on my copyediting and proofreading business, which haven't gotten me anywhere so far. I love your idea of crowdfunding to help struggling creators.

I'm reading books on how to write a cozy mystery. I'm not sure if they'll help or not, but a bit of guidance can't hurt. And it might help me brainstorm an idea I actually like. But it will have guinea pigs in it.

I'd love to get more into beta reading. I'm doing my first one. A paranormal. The author's considering me for the copyedit, but his manuscript needs a development edit or manuscript assessment. I mentioned that to him and gave him a few names. Even if he doesn't hire me, I hope he gets it done.
