One of the best parts of being a professor is getting the opportunity to see your students continue to grow after they graduate. 1/

Reposting my @theglobeandmail.com op-ed from last year re: Air Canada strike in light of the Carney gov't's current plan to "reform" the Canada Labour Code in a way that will curtail workers' Charter-protected right to strike. It seems that they still don't want to learn from history 1/

Not quite sure why this is popping up in my feed today, because IIRC 1) this was 26 years ago, not 5 years ago; and 2) it was June 1, not July 26. I’m pretty sure this was taken at the anti-FTAA protest in Windsor, Ontario, just months after the anti-WTO Battle of Seattle the previous November. 1/

But given the scope and scale of the challenge, (re)turning to variants of the worker-led approaches that built the modern labour movement has to be part of the conversation. You might disagree with Eric’s argument, but you have to engage with it. 2/end

Still not fully recovered from last week’s @labornotes.bsky.social conference in Chicago. Despite taking place in a time of huge challenges for unions and the working class in general, it was an inspiring place to take stock, recharge, and gear up for the battles ahead. 1/

I planned to teach Jo Freeman’s article on “The Tyranny of Structurelessness” in my social movements class this week, before students voted to strike for Palestine. So it made sense to include it in the students’ strike school. If you’re on campus, come by Leacock 210 at 1:00 pm to listen in!

Looks like the STM drivers got a tentative agreement hours before they were about to hit the picket lines and shut down Montreal transit for the weekend. This is how strike threats are supposed to work, providing the leverage necessary to get the employer to reach a negotiated settlement. 1/

I’m all for people wearing what they want at conferences. Were I to try pulling off such a look, I’d take a cue from our Kiwi colleagues, who know a thing or two about wearing shorts in more professional settings. This Wellington civil servant ca. 1973 would be on my mood board.

Absent a compelling case, the Quebec Superior Court denied McGill’s request for a permanent injunction. Pointedly, the court noted that an injunction is not “meant to be a message broadcasted to the whole community to signify that certain acts will not be tolerated” 4/

McGill administrators did not make a convincing case, providing little evidence for imminent danger requiring injunctive relief aside from the Deputy Provost’s vibes that “something” might happen. The judge was not amused. 3/
