Getting stuck into the home stretch of dissertation writing… Book history folks—what are your favorite readings discussing the relationship between image and text? Bonus points for early modern context!

Happy first day of #RSA2026! @ehxlibris.bsky.social, @undomielise.bsky.social, and Tamara Mahadin, and I have made a new bingo card! Your prize is early modern bragging rights.
Bingo card with conference cliches for the 2026 RSA conference
Boxes separated by semicolons:
First row: Statement shoes; Presenter goes over time by more than 5 minutes; Person enters room, realizes it’s the wrong session and leaves; Enthusiastic meeting between conference buds that have not seen each other in forever; Magnet from bookseller vendor
Second row: The overladen scholar (carrying drink, multiple coats and bags); See familiar face…forgot their name; Someone taking notes with hotel stationery;Uncontrollable coughing or sneezing from an audience member; Elbow patches
Third row: Archive that is not an archive (aka Derridian archive); Q&A becomes debate between 1 panelist and 1 audience member; FREE SPACE “More of a comment than a question…”; RSA name tags in the wild (outside of hotel); Slide with picture of archival material or rare book
Fourth row: Standing room only session; More than 50% of audience gets up and leaves during Q&A; Any non-English language quote without a translation; “As my mentor/advisor, [name drop] would say…”; Grad student giving their first RSA presentation
Fifth row: “Have you read…?”; Statement raincoat or umbrella; Includes social media handle in presentation; Technology issue; Forgot breakfast, eating granola bar in a corner

It’s so cool to see early examples of superstitions and old wives’ tales that still get passed down. See in particular “Of the ominous appearing of owles and ravens,” “Of the falling of salt,” and “Of the cheeks burning, or ear tingling.” Ohio State Spec Coll SPEC.RARE.MS.ENG.0007

It took me forever, but I finally finished this manuscript-inspired knitted cowl and while it’s not perfect it was an excellent Learning Experience.

Absolutely nothing beats the absolute rush of unpacking the university library book you feared you accidentally sold to half-price books. Obviously the lesson I took away from this is do not get rid of the books, ever, for any reason; in fact, keep all of the books, forever.

Calling any pottery/ceramic conservation folks: my mom inherited some of her great-grandmother’s china, and the sugar bowl is really discolored. She found a website suggesting soaking it in hydrogen peroxide, but I told her to wait to get a second opinion. Thoughts on how to proceed?

There was another woman in sweatpants at Half Price Books on a Saturday night and we studiously avoided eye contact and I feel like we would be friends if we weren’t both the kind of people who go to Half Price Books in sweatpants on a Saturday night.
