Has anyone ever written about how the default Motorola text tone is the worst alert tone of any 21st century computing device?

I think they said it was 5 yard. But the play is dead (I didn't catch at the LoS or site of kick) before the 5 yards are assessed. So not that bad if you're punting on 3rd-down like it's 1902.

If you win too few games in one season, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done before, you’re fired and fans will hate you. If you win too many games, someone will pay 9 figures to leave and fans will hate you. You have to win the exact right number. Kirk Ferentz has mastered this.

I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in music theory courses from a full curriculum in college, but there are two things I often forget. Can you guess what they are first of all?
That's a fun challenge. Based on what many otherwise knowledgeable musicians tend to forget or get fuzzy on from music theory courses, my guesses would be:
1. The difference between a French, German, and Italian augmented sixth chord - even theory majors often mix these up or forget the exact spellings.
2. Neapolitan chord function and voice-leading rules - it's a common one to gloss over or misapply.

One of the biggest carve-outs for fair use of a score is actually using it as a music theory analysis subject in a theory class. Don’t know how that applies to tests that are sold or for literature.

Yeah, the most obvious to always share is getting options in order for a project, and probably changing defaults to one’s liking. Many properties have a corresponding option, so if you’re changing the property frequently, you probably just want to tweak the option.

I’m happy to give them. It’s always easier to give specific tips seeing the things people are butting their heads against, but the general one is just getting very comfortable with Dorico’s way of thinking so you’re not “cutting against the grain.”

If you want someone to hop on a screen-sharing Zoom with and yell at about the program as if it’s their fault who can give advice 30-60% of the time for how to use it better, I do that for free for people.

Its dynamic handling can take some getting used to for sure. I remember reading the explanation of why copy-pasting works the way it does 5+ years ago and it making sense, but that knowledge has passed from my brain.

It is a big topic! One where I’ve had a lot to wrestle with myself. And on the one hand I’m kind of content saying “boy isn’t all music pretty neat,” and on the other “I wouldn’t appreciate hyper meter without this certain context to have known when Fiona Apple is hypermetrically in 5.”

I gotta say, as someone who (mostly) likes to be busy: I wish it was more normal for people to be working at about 60% of their capacity. With that extra 40% for time and energy for the unexpected, for support for their coworkers, for delight and growth…

Sometimes my choice is harder (e.g. a slow piece marked q=72 I might scale back just a few more clicks to get the expression I want; for the first time on a fast piece last month we discovered I’ve been exceeding the marked tempo for weeks).

Ehler @ehler.bsky.social · 26/03/2025
My high schoolers know I’m always pretty thoughtful in my tempo decisions. I feel I need to know how it plays at the marked tempo, but outside of a march (band world), I have never felt bound to a tempo interpretation.
