Delighted that our new paper on #Ediacaran early animal life is now out rdcu.be/fnksl @natecoevo.nature.com We show that asexual reproduction, stoloniferous reduces competition for Ediacaran early animals 580-560 million years ago, and that this then reduces early animal diversity

Interesting week with Victor Bonito from Fiii Reef Explorer mapping out our time-series coral plots. There was a recent bleaching event so many soft corals have died but some are bleached but still hanging on. Fingers crossed most of them recuperate 🤞
On left are bleached soft corals on right three dead and decaying soft corals on the Coral Coast, Fiji.

This #MolluscMonday here are some great ones from my recent fieldwork in Fiji with Victor Bonito, Reef Explorer Fiji: two octopus watch Victor take video to make 3d models, a clam and a nudibranch. We are mapping out different areas in the reef flats to see how soft corals change through time.

We demonstrate biological differences in community composition are distinguishable from post fossilisation processes such as erosion and while density and community dynamics can differ even if community composition is consistent.

This #FossilFriday our paper on the Slopey G surface at Mistaken Point, Newfoundland, Canada. Both the E and G surfaces outcrop at two different places 1 kilometres apart which means we can compare how ecological dynamics change over large spatial scales.

Just finished some fantastic fieldwork in Fiji with Victor Bonito @ Reef Explorer Fiji. We have started out a long-term project looking at soft corals on the reef flats mapping out multiple plots from four different sites to see what the ecological dynamics are & how they change through time.

from Discovery Geopark, Newfoundland, Canada. These #Ediacaran fossils reproduce asexually via stolon or runners so the babies are clones of their parents and grandparents. This runner-like reproduction means they are often found in little clusters.
