2/2 “To the ends of the earth…” a dramione ficlet inspired by Iceland (and the Lord Huron song) (Text is also in the alt text)

Hermione lay still as he crawled closer over her, his shoulders rolling beneath his dark shirt. She felt the bed dip where his hands pressed.

“Every day, I’ve been in this windy fucking place looking for you,” he said, drawing alongside her and draping a leg over hers. “Rocky, windswept, barren, squawking seabirds. Took a Muggle ferry…fucking dreadful.”

A hand slipped beneath her head, his fingers flexing in her curls. The other traced lightly over her face. She watched him, unmoving, waiting to see what he would do, while her heart beat rapidly beneath his arm.

Beside her bed, a small window was cracked. A cool breeze rolled off the arctic sea into the white-washed room. It was midnight and still a shimmering glow of sunlight cast a pearlescent light over everything.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were going, Hermione?” The pad of his finger caressed her lip.

Her heart stuttered. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “But it had been awful. Everything seemed to be unravelling at once…and those dismissive comments…months of work questioned. And then the charms weren’t working…” her breath hitched, “and suddenly I—I just—I just needed—” She glanced out the window. The sliver of a mountain lay blue against the horizon across the cold water.

A hum rumbled in his chest. “I know, darling,” he whispered, his nose brushing over hers. “Tell me, when you need space, must it really be from me too?”

She squeezed her eyes tightly shut and shook her head. The taste of salt lingered in the back of her throat.

“It’s not you. It wasn’t. I just…sometimes I can only think clearly when I’m gone—away—alone.”

She shook her head again. She must have hurt him. He must be so furious with her, so frustrated. She knew he would be when she left, but she had to, she had to, she had to. And now she couldn’t open her eyes.

A fulmar cry carried on the breeze into the window.

“Hermione,” he whispered, his finger brushing against her lower lip again, “look at me.”

Slowly, light filtered in. Silver eyes filled her vision.

“You brilliant idiot,” he said, smiling against her, “I’m in love with you. Desperately.”

Her breath caught. His rapid heartbeat thrummed against her.

“But I drive you mad with my opinions and schedule and projects and —”

“Mmm, I rather like that sort of madness.”

“But I left—” she swallowed.

“Yes, Hermione, and it was a bit shit waiting around in the lab wondering why you were late—and then why you were fucking missing.” His voice was calm, but sharp. Forgiven, yes, but clearly the eight days

between them were not forgotten. He leaned in closer—impossibly close. “But, know this: no matter where you go, I will still love you. Run off to the Westfjörds here again for all I care, just… leave a note next time, will you? So I don’t panic when you’re not at your desk.”

His nose nuzzled against hers. She couldn’t help the grin tugging at her cheek. “Did you make a scene?”

“Of course I fucking did.”

Their lips brushed against one another in the ghost of a kiss. But she had more to say. More he needed to know.

“Draco, I sometimes need to leave. To just…escape.”

“I know you do, darling. Just tell me where you are… Or at least a general direction. I promise to give you a three-day head start and then come find you.”

His finger pulled at her lower lip, his eyes darkening.

“Draco,” she breathed against him, “I love you.”

He crawls toward me. “I have it on great authority that you, Hermione Jean Granger, once forged a signature on a piece of legislation.”

I choke. No. There’s no way he knows about the Ley—

“The Ley Line Rehabilitation Act, I believe. Forgery. A criminal act done by one very smitten little minister. Oh what’s that? I happen to have a photograph.”

I can barely breathe or I’m breathing too much. Either way I’m minutes from death. If he’s dedicated his life to protecting me, he’s doing a terrible job now.

“Don’t say it, Malfoy. Do not say it—”

“Look just there. Who signed this document? Was it Minister Hermione Granger? Or was it Mrs Draco Malfoy? I’m having trouble deciphering your terrible scribble.”
