The important thing about Anthropic is that the reason they love the BDSM cults is because they have toxoplasmosis. The same way a toxoplasmotic mouse will become aroused by cats, Anthropic employees exhibit an exceptional counterphobia, and will systematically produce exactly what they fear.

Dario is a special case here, insofar as he was one of the 20 at OpenAI, and he did have brain worms, and he did leave. As a result, he believes the things he's saying.

I know companies for whom Jev-like models will save 5-6 digits of LLM spend per month while also improving latency.

Many people have wrong models of why AI lab leaders talk about x-risk. It's not marketing or attempts at regulatory capture. There are 30 employees who do the most important research at any lab, and 20 have brain worms. Those 20 need you to say "I want a mutual pause" or they'll go to a competitor.

apropos nothing, I think it’s a grand historical tragedy that the Google employees fighting Project Maven had so little political discipline and consequently lost the battle against turning the company into a military contractor. Not to say they could have done it—but that group definitely couldn’t.

Chris Beiser @egg.computer · 07/09/2026
I do not like that you are talking about shooting people who are in several cases my friends. If you see the labs as the Great Satan, and think they can only be dealt with by polarizing employees into a grand blunder, fine, death threats could be the right strategy. I don’t think they are.

People picketing defense contractors typically strongly endorse nonviolence; the pause people have in many cases not done so.

Yes, and I don’t think anyone thinks OpenAI’s been good on this one. Charitably, I think there are limits to what he can tweet about without legal getting involved. I do think that this set of tweets are about vitirol, not content, and the (relatively) is doing a lot of work here.

Chris Beiser @egg.computer · 07/09/2026
They’re not the threat, but if you see them every way on your way to work, you will adopt a bunker mentality about them. Which is bad! And I think he’s aware of that, because that’s what his posts there are about!

Chris Beiser @egg.computer · 07/09/2026
he doesn't come out and say it but my interpretation of what he's really subtweeting is the pause people screaming and swearing and posting 1000 death threats every day about random individual coworkers of his

people outside the bay area do not grasp that OpenAI is a company that wants to make money, but Anthropic is a Leninist doomsday cult building 10,000 Optimal Cadres in a datacenter in order to win WWIII

i think it's probably good that new models will kill the creative coding industrial complex by just letting people make things themselves

I have several times found it very helpful, when I have cleaned up many of the problems, to ask an agent to make a list of guidelines that the fixes seem to imply following that it did not the first time. Adding these fixes to an agents.md file… generally helps a lot?

i think the underlying question is whether that makes them "real" (i would say sorta yes but not with the implications that people typically imagine)

personally I think the ethical way for this to proceed would have been to spend the followup stories on the hiring committee

i do think that it's good that hong, as a slopulist anti-data center candidate, lost the primary. but i must say that I respect her opposition to holidays.

i don't think it makes sense to fight ceaselessly to get people to say they like data centers… we just have to get zoning declared unconstitutional forever

Let me answer honestly: I did eat your plums. I found them in the icebox, and I'm not going to pretend I didn't know you were keeping them for breakfast. I understand if you're upset by that. There's one more load-bearing detail I should mention: they were so sweet, and so cold.

Mamdani's focus on state capacity represents a form of civic education about what govt does in an age of bureaucracy-bashing. He also connects improving state capacity to his core policy goals on housing, childcare, consumer and worker protection. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/mamdani-in...
Why is Mamadani so invested in the nuts and bolts of administration? He closed his speech announcing the PIT crews with this:

In the words of Jeff Gordon: I’ve never believed in luck. If you perform well, execute, have a good race car, and a good race team, you’re going to increase your chances dramatically of having better results. City Hall is building a team that performs well and executes well. You better believe that our chances of delivering well for New Yorkers are increasing dramatically as well.

lots of people say you should go to a "top school" to meet smart people. not true. smart people are everywhere. what's unusual about is that they have many smart people who are well adjusted.

like "funded by Trump Ally" is probably true under a reasonable definition for like, 10-15% of all series C+ companies and I think people are wrongly reading it to entail actual control

I think that this kind of framing is borderline irresponsible and borders on encouraging conspiracy thinking. This company has 17 investors, and one is Founders Fund.

Similarly, Anthropic is making a similar mistake with, (paraphrasing,) "AI might be the new Nuclear Weapons." You hear "dangerous, should be subject to arms controls." Washington hears, "it's the way we're going to win WWIII."

In 2019, one of the phrases of the time was "Data is the new oil," which activists used to mean it was a dangerous, extractive industry which it would be a mistake to build dependence on. But in Washington, that was taken as, "Data is a strategic resource that the US should maximize production of."

the creators are not very good at economics because they work on software, not economics. that's why they're wrong about this.
