I loved this! I was like “well it can’t be as good as the first one but I’ll read it anyways” and then it was, in fact, just as good.

Another vote for Duck Duck go. It’s not perfect but it’s better than Google by a lot

My school admin is leaning into AI a lot less than at the more prestigious schools. We have always been late adopters and i think that’s serving us well in the current environment. (I would give the pope credit for this, we’re Jesuit, but we were slow-rolling AI before he came out against it)

One of my neighbors has, instead of ye standard home depot 12-footer, a statue which is the top 1/3 of a skeleton seemingly pushing itself out of the ground ... and it is also 12 feet high. THIS IS THE FUTURE.

It has a sequel! well, ish. Short story, maybe novella length, revisiting same characters many years in the future. “Tears waiting to be diamonds.”

Damn, that's some persistence! My cat only ever manages two or three licks before realizing that he'd actually prefer to be biting.

i hit this point last year and have switched to Duck Duck go and been happy. It’s not “google circa 2005” levels of good but it’s at least Google circa 2015 imo.

I mean, when you only have two words they have to cover a lot, sigh.

Cozy and dark are THE only two adjectives that exist in publishing right now.

Not really sure where a bunch of liberals got the idea that they can’t win without throwing trans people in the garbage, but they’re stupid and cruel and wrong. If you want a human sacrifice so damned bad put gavin newsom in the wicker man

I think way too many authors get caught up in "oh my god I can't say "said" ten times on the same page!" and i want to shake them. You sure can! I won't even notice!!

I suppose there is something impressive about coming up from first principles with literally every bad, dumb idea about technology that anyone has ever had. But not the good kind of impressive.

I am a broken record on this topic, but: The decimation of education has been the Republican party’s goal for a long time, because they know that history (and reason and science) prove them wrong on every count.

The notation in this paper is GIBBERISH. "Just write a K and then put *anything you like* in parenthesis afterwards!" WHO MADE THESE CHOICES I HATE THEM. (it was me.) #mathsky

This is not hard to understand, and yet! My phone needs to be smaller than a piece of toast. My women's pants pockets were not engineered for pieces of toast.

Seriously. In 2007 I was f***ing reading stuff in research papers and then turning around and writing wikipedia stubs based on that. Wikipedia wasn't *perfect* but it was useful!

I bet that's more true for teens than adults! I like thinking but by 8pm my brain is toast, bedtime reading is about slowing the spinning down enough to sleep. My teenager however has infinite energy the whole time she's awake and probably doesn't mind thinking before bed.

What I’m going to try (starting next week 😭) is frequent reminders that the number one role of homework is to help them learn, and i can’t stop them from using ai (and honestly, most of these math problems can be done with a calculator) but they’re not going to have an ai or a calculator on tests.
120
Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
But *jazz hands* AI! AI is gonna get us to the moon. Somehow. If we just trust it.

Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Yes I love this! Equally good is putting a library hold on a book by an unknown author and forgetting everything about it until your hold *poof* arrives in your mailbox six months later. Sometimes it's shit but when it's up your alley it's so fun.

Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
The only good faith interpretation of this that i can come up with is that the author thinks that writing is important and working with data isn’t. And while that’s his choice, it’s ludicrous to claim that to make any other choice is malpractice.
010
Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
It’s hard for me to take that claim seriously. evidence shows that when people outsource a skill to AI, they start to lose it. This is a bargain that an adult might feel is worthwhile; but to force that bargain on your students is to cheat them of the education you’re meant to be giving them

Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Like, i teach calculus without calculators. This does not mean that my students won’t be able to solve calculus problems requiring calculators when they encounter them in their engineering classes.
110
Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
My feeling is that students don’t need to be “taught” to use AI, they can (and do) figure it out pretty quickly on their own.

Percy Jackson season 3 should be releasing a new episode on Christmas, i will look forward to that! It’s the only current show that my tween, my teen, and the adults in my house all enjoy.

I think you're right that "it's not as fun now" is the actual heart of the complaint. "I'm not king of the mountain anymore so I'm taking my toys and going HOME."

(I wonder if the answer to this is that there is sexual violence in *Shards of Honor* and that made people think she wasn't appropriate for teen readers. I admire Bujold's willingness to write MilFic that doesn't shy away from SV but it also makes her a little tricky to recommend.)

Emily @eepbeepbeep.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I spent much of the 80s and 90s skulking around public libraries reading *everything* on the scifi and fantasy shelves, and I had to find out about Bujold from an NPR list in 2020?! Ridiculous! Why didn't someone hand me *Warriors apprentice* in 1994 and change the course of my entire life???
