Ok ❤️ (It's hard to get detailed info on wage x hours, but like 1/3 of renter households make <$35k.)

Sure, and I don't have the figures for Austin handy, but in many regions the typical renter household is at 50-60% of AMI (roughly 'Very Low Income' in the chart), and 1/5-1/4 are under 30% AMI (i.e. 'Extremely Low Income).

Agreed - looking at aggregate changes in rents rarely tells us what we need to know about affordability. A large segment of the workforce makes <$15/hr and struggles to get north of 30hrs/wk. I just don't think it's reasonable to expect the private market to meet those housing needs.

Made some chocolate babka over the holidays and was very pleased with it. Any recs for bakes to try for a medium-experience home baker trying to stretch their skills? I have tried and failed at pastry so maybe a stepping stone between this and that? #baking #homebaking

Exactly! It is a completely unserious proposal that no one with any knowledge of the topic would endorse. This is a recurring absurdity of these "merit" weirdos.

Extraordinary courage from Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim, 43-year-old father of two, who bravely risked his life to save his neighbors celebrating Hanukkah. Praying for his full & speedy recovery. And so deeply inspired by his example.

I mean, that is what you would expect if economic marginalization mapped onto other forms of marginalization... Is it a coincidence then that socially and politically marginalized groups are vastly overrepresented in care occupations?

Interesting -- this also popped up on my feed recently, despite being from 2020. Unfortunately eugenics and reproductive abuse has a long history in the US, predating any Nazi government.

One of my earliest moments of radicalization was in 2005 when Larry Summers said that women biologically have less aptitude for science than men. Following that, scores of equally unimpressive people wrote pieces trying to explain or justify his remarks, when they should have called for his removal.

It definitely won't stop the conspiracy freaks and that is a silly argument, but it is absolutely true that we need more research on medication safety and efficacy for pregnant people.

Redemption arcs are possible for everyone. But they don't start (or even probably end) with a seat in Congress.

Of course, if any progressive were to say this about USAID (which would actually be true), the right wing news media (and New York Times tbh) would endlessly cite it as proof that they don't care about "real" Americans.

The article describes researchers *intentionally* creating AI survey respondents, specifically for underrepresented groups? I'm aware of the profound difficulties facing survey research, but this is incredibly bleak.

What happened to coal jobs is even simpler. It is the same thing that happened throughout much of the country — productivity gains led to fewer workers needed to produce the same output.

An additional force hurt coal employment — regional competition between the East and the West. The labor-lean West has taken significant market share from the labor-intensive East. The result is that far fewer miners are needed.

Some policies have been proposed to bring back coal jobs. One is to cut environmental regulations, both on coal and natural gas production. But think about that move — it will probably accelerate the decline of coal, as natural gas makes further inroads into the market.
