Opus 5.5 AI is astonishing. Look at the 3D racing game it helped me build. Then consider that it's running on a 2014-vintage Nvidia GT 720 graphics card with just 1GB of VRAM... [Sorry for intermittent sound glitches in video. Something weird is going on with my capture app.]

Burnham's weak sauce stance on Brexit today was enough to send the right wing media into a rabid frenzy, but far too non-committal to move the needle for Rejoin enthusiasts. Takes a special kind of genius to triangulate that badly. Obviously a trait he inherited from Starmer.

The madlibs Harry and Meghan headline generator at the Express has hit peak stupidity. Has it burnt out on the dozens and dozens of hit pieces the gutter rag published over the last 24H?

Considering it's just a pinhole in one bit of cardboard projecting onto another bit of cardboard, I am pretty happy how this turned out. (There's no do-over if I limit myself to the UK, since there won't be another totalish eclipse until the 2080s.)

What's the difference between my tiny Stocks and Shares ISA portfolio, and a multi billion dollar hedge fund run by a 24-year old whizz kid? I bought my shares using actual money not borrowed margin, so I didn't have to dump everything at the very bottom yesterday. Up 21% today.

Could one reason for the declining birth rate in the UK be the huge cost of raising a child, which seems to be from £200,000 to £300,000 by age 18? That's a vast chunk of change to find at a time of constrained earnings and huge cost of living pressures. (AI data below.)

Beware of scam ads that send you to fake websites designed to trick you. The scam ads can be embedded in normal apps or websites. They look superficially innocuous, but hijack your click and send you to the scam site. Example: this fake Apple warning. Probably wants to install a virus.

Claude Fable is amazing. The summary below is the result of a long session it spent deep diving into some code for me. Opus 4.8 and ChatGPT-5.5 had failed to spot any of the residual problems. Fable went through them like a chainsaw through butter.
Where things stand
Across five sessions: 23 real bugs fixed, spanning silent data loss, broken crypto round-trips, CRDT resurrection, dead feature wiring, security weaknesses, timer leaks, and now statistically-wrong estimators — with the suite grown 37 → 74 tests, all green, and a 298-line audit trail. The changeset is 54 modified files + 3 new. Coverage-wise, every core file, abstraction, subsystem, and every module over ~200 lines has now been line-read; the ~50 small remaining modules have passed all pattern scans (equality, sort comparators, division guards, timer leaks, unbounded growth) but haven't each had a dedicated line-read — that's the honest residual, catalogued in the notes if you want a final completionist pass.

Compounding is magical! £1,000 invested in the MSCI World Index when it was created 56 years ago would be worth £266,000 today. After inflation, £1,000 in 1969 is £14,948 today. So your return above inflation would still be over £250,000. Invest while you're young. Future you will thank you.
Image showing that the MSCI World Index had a compound annual growth rate of 10.49% a year over the last 56 years.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon has written the most ignorant paragraph I've seen from any Telegraph writer this year. Where does the paper find these oxygen thieves? In reality an estimated 100,000 people died of the effects of radiation after the two bombs were dropped. archive.ph/H376D
From the Telegraph article:

Against dispersed, dug-in Ukrainian troops (as opposed to urban areas crammed with civilians) it would take an awful lot of nukes to make a serious difference. Assuming the use of air bursts to cause maximum destruction and leave the battlefield passable for the Russians, radiological consequences would be minimal. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit by tactical-range air bursts, remained inhabited and are thriving cities today, after all.

Starmer has finally come to the same realisation I have been warning about for years: if a Labour government lets in Reform at the next election, that will be deemed an unforgivable error. Essentially the end of the Labour party if it happens. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...
Guardian Live Politics blog entry:

Starmer says Labour will never be forgiven if it gets this wrong.

He is implicitly talking about the prospect of Reform UK taking power, although he does not say that out loud.

UPDATE: Starmer said:

I take responsibility for not walking away, not plunging our country into chaos, as the Tories did time and again, chaos that did lasting damage to this country.

A Labour government would never be forgiven for inflicting that on our country again.

If you've not been paying attention today, Labour's losses have mounted as more council results came in. They're now down by close to 1,500 seats, very substantially worse than the picture last night when many councils still had to declare.

I wrote this article in 2023, a year before the last general election. It's even more relevant now. medium.com/@edwinhaywar...
Britain is at a crossroads. The next general election may determine the fate of the country for decades to come. But Labour face a daunting challenge. They must undo the damage caused by the Tories and Brexit, while facing a hostile media and a volatile electorate. In this piece, I argue that Labour need to adopt a new approach to Brexit, one that does not rule out closer ties with the EU or even rejoining. I also explain the need to introduce PR as the only way to ensure long-term stability and progressive change. Without adopting these twin steps, Labour are at real risk of being a one-term wonder.

This screengrabbed exchange illustrates perfectly why it is disastrous to let the politics of envy chase away very high earners in the UK through poor policy decisions. The wider cost to Britain of losing each one of them is enormous when considered over the longer term.
