1/9🚨 New paper out now, open access in JHE 🚨 Can a single isolated arm or leg bone tell you what species it belonged to? This study tests this across all extant great apes — with real consequences for how we identify fossil hominins. sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧵👇

NEW When #Neanderthal remains were discovered in Shanidar Cave, Iraqi Kurdistan, the fragile and crushed condition of the bones prevented detailed analysis. A year of conservation work helps explore the complex mortuary practices observed at the site. 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 🏺 #Archaeology

Interested in human evolution? Check out the virtual environment of the Sterkfontein Caves in South Africa's 'Cradle of Humankind', allowing learners, educators and scientists to access this rich Australopithecus site without damaging its #archaeology 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy...

Towards a virtual environment for the Sterkfontein Caves, South Africa: developing a georeferenced and optimised digital dataset | Antiquity | Cambridge Core
Accessibility at the Sterkfontein Caves UNESCO World Heritage Site limits public and scientific engagement. The authors digitally visualised part of the cave using laser scans and photogrammetry, geospatially integrating the digital cave and fossil datasets. This enables broader access for learners, educators and scientists and enhances scientific outreach potential.
