This week I've been reading a wonderfully well written book by @sonali-m-19.bsky.social If you are either an international scientist, or support them, I highly encourage you to pick up this book.

Any idea what is wrong with this hummingbird? It has been sat doing this for over 20 minutes. It occasionally takes a drink. It is so much larger then all the others. I want to help but have no idea how to.

Where do you find jobs to apply for? Lauren Celano at #ABRCMS2025

Watching Lauren Celano talk about the state of jobs in industry. The state of industry is in flux which is due to issues with funding. Funders prefer to support 1 company with a large amount of capital versus 10 companies with less each. ##ABRCMS2025

Just gave my "A Practical Guide To Negotiation" at #ABRCMS2025. I asked my participants to practice negotiating for a hypothetical role. They did amazingly well and asked great questions. I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation at the mentoring tables.

On Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom. The freedom to be who you want and to follow your dreams. The freedom to live without fear and to follow your principles even when challenged. The freedom to believe in science and medical advances. 1/

A quote from Nancy Arroyo Ruffi. A reminder to be your beautiful self and take risks, even if you are scared. We only grow when we challenge ourselves. If you are looking to try something new, give it a go. You may find it really hard, but true failure would be never trying. #IBelieveInYou

I have seen many posts from scientists who are leaving their government positions within various branches of the NIH, CDC, FDA etc. because they won't compromise their ethics or values by working for the current administration. This is in addition to those who have been removed from positions.

I also encourage you to feed some porcupines and touch a sloth which was definitely my favorite part of my vacation! The Wildlife Learning Center was amazing and if you are in SoCal should be on your todo list!

I had a very large attendance which I am very happy with. The more people I can teach how to successfully negotiate, the happier I am! Once I had sent all those emails I put up my out of office reply as my parents came to visit for 3 weeks.

A few weeks ago, I presented my most popular presentation at the National Postdoctoral Association Annual Meeting. I then sent what felt like hundreds of emails to the attendees with my budget template and negotiation handout.

I've been thinking a lot about this quote from Susan Wojcicki. I believe she is encouraging you to take the risk to do something new because it is unlikely that a perfect, risk-free opportunity will land in your lap. If you want to do it, you need to be willing to take the risk.

8 years ago, as the chair of the board of directors of the NPA, I gave the opening address of the annual meeting. It was the first time this much pink was on stage for an NPA event! I will be presenting at the NPA meeting on negotiating salary on Saturday. Will this jacket make a return?!

I certainly felt that one! I've noticed a number of much smaller ones recently from the earthquake bots but haven't felt any of them.

There is so much happening in STEMM, research and education that it is natural to feel overwhelmed. At this point so many different groups of people have been "thrown to the wolves" that there may be many "packs", but they all need to work together to gain traction.

I saw this on @linkedin.com and thought I would share it. This is a great description of what DEI is. #DEI
LinkedIn post from Tequila Smith. My husband posted this today and I wanted to share:

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but they are attempting to change the meaning behind DEI. I’ve done DEI training sessions at my previous employer, so I have an understanding of what it is really about.

It’s mainly based on helping everyone understand that we all have biases. Those biases come from a lot of different factors and it’s not a bad thing. DEI teaches us that we need to be aware of those biases in the workplace. If unchecked, we could make bad decisions for the company if the decisions we make are driven by our biases.

Diversity could simply mean, don’t hire 90% of the people at the company from the same university. Equity is simply about giving people with less influence and/or power a chance to be heard and seen. Inclusion is about listening to people with less influence and/or power and making them a part of the decision making process. It’s an attempt to reduce or eliminate “group think” or letting the most dominant person or people, run meetings and/or make decisions.

DEI is not and has never been a bad thing!
