No hobby updates this week as I'm on holiday, but I did sneak in a trip I've wanted to do all my life to Culloden. A very moving place and a great museum. Now browsing Pendraken's website to bring it to life in 10mm.
The memorial stone on the Culloden monument.A view from the southern edge of the battlefield, from within a reconstructed stone enclosure. The side of the wall of the visitor's centre. There are 50 projecting stones representing the government dead, and 1,500 for those fighting in the Jacobite cause killed during and after the battle.White flowers growing in the wall.

That's very true, I think while some people would like niche regiments, there is some mileage in having a "generic" guard regiment that can be a template for all sorts of interpretations and custom creations.

Cool though the new Cadians are, one of the sad things is the homogenisation of modern military equipment and weapons means they do look a bit generic. There are loads of historical inspirations that are much more interesting. Will be eagerly awaiting the new Steel Legion!

It's definitely still there. But I think in the early codexes it was more explicit (Tsargrad comes to mind, and Ork's Drift). I'm sure I recall an interview, possibly with Warwick Kinrade, that said IG were created specifically for historical wargamers at GW, to bring their passion into 40K.

Thank you! Really happy with them, now I'll do some of the 95th. I'm really into historical wargaming too and I loved that aspect of older Guard armies, where they drew inspiration from historical forces (still happens today I suppose)

Haha thanks mate! Yeah I'm thinking when I've got forty of them it'll make a nice firing line

Yeah it was about two months and there's free shipping over a certain threshold, so I didn't have to pay any shipping or taxes as it was quite a big bulk order

They do, they're fantastic. I ordered mine from VM but following the tracking I think they were sent from a US based printing firm. It did take a long time but arrived with no issues at all.
The firing line next to some Cadians, similarly well matched in height.

Haha thanks mate, yeah I've been looking forward to working on these for months. They scale perfectly, fit exactly with Guard models
The base of Victoria Miniatures next of a Space Marine on the left which is a head taller, and a Krieg Guardsman on the right. It's hard to judge as the shako gives them an artificially big height but the eye levels are about the same.

Haha brilliant! These have come out superbly and it's glorious to see them in their first action!

"South Hexis, ready! Present! FIRE!!!" Guardsmen of the Praetorian 6/102nd take aim and prepare to deliver a volley of lasgun fire. Despite being a ragged band of ne'er-do-wells and rapscallions, the steadying presence of Captain Thorne's Light Company has a steadying effect on these conscripts.
A rectangular base with five Pretorian Guard troopers, rear rank standing and firing, front rank kneeling. They are in red tunics, white breeches, wearing black shakos.A close up view of the base.A side view showing the white piping and yellow facings of the South Hexis regiment.A frontal view, lasguns aimed at the camera.

I think your ORBAT stuff really interested me, but I'm sure I was following since before you were talking about that - so I probably saw something cool before that! Attitude is a big thing for me, I think well-meaning, polite people tend to search each other out on here.

Finished my first test Praetorian Guardsman, and I love it! Just 39 more to go...
A kneeling Imperial Guardsman with a wooden-stocked lasgun. He has a red tunic with yellow facings, and white trousers. He has a black shako.

Oh that would be cool, with each order you get a single free miniature of the soldier stood at ease, in exactly that objective-capturing pose!

I got the physical miniatures as I'm also reluctant to get into printing, they did take nearly two months to arrive in the UK but in great condition with no other issues. Would be interesting to see what you do with them!

And three heavy weapons teams. I've used the pith helmets here and will give them blue tunics with black helmets to give them a Royal Artillery look.
Three Imperial Guard wheeled heavy weapons teams, each with two crew and a small limber behind them. These are also mounted on rectangular bases.

These will be the redcoat infantry of the South Hexis, aka Praetorian 5/102nd. They'll be on rectangular "firing line" bases to emphasise the rigidity of their tactics. For +1% Napoleonicness, the bayonets are mounted on the side of the barrels not underneath.
A sergeant with a pistol and pace stick. Instead of the pith helmet he is wearing a shako.Another trooper with shako firing a lasrifle.Front view, you can see one subtle difference is the bayonet is mounted on the side of the barrel not underneath.Five firing troopers, standing and kneeling, mounted on a square base.

Had a great night building up a load of the Grimdark Empire stuff. It's really nice, good quality stuff and simple to build. Here are a few of my favourite bits so far, these will be the 95th Lasrifles:
A Pretorian Guard officer holding a sword and pistol, looking a lot like Sean Bean in Sharpe.A rifleman with a sniper rifle.A Darragh O'Malley lookalike, Sergeant Harper holding a volley gun.A rifle trooper holding a lasgun.

Stand by everyone - it's about to get Napoleonic in here! My Victoria Miniatures Grimdark Empire stuff has finally arrived! I'm getting stuck in straight away. These will be the Praetorian South Hexis regiment, led by Colonel Sir Henry Simpson, backed up by Capt Blackthorn and the 95th Lasrifles.
A selection of Victoria Miniatures Grimdark Empire models laid out on a desk. There are also some osprey books about the Peninsula War.

Progress on the Gargant is slow, but enjoyable. I'm used to painting models that you can finish in two days max so it feels odd to still be getting up to the Agrax stage after a week. Safe to say I'm well out of my comfort zone here! Pleased with how it's coming together though.
A Warhammer giant, holding a multi barreled volley gun and preparing to either fire it like a shotgun or use it as a club. The skin is all painted and the first layer of paint is on about half of the details like patched clothes.

Thanks mate, high praise! Yeah I'm not sure it would work for anything mid or late war but for that brand new look it suits pretty well.

With some focus time yesterday I finished the last three bases and got all my early war Germans infantry from the Flames of War Blitzkrieg starter box finished. Happy with the outcome - I'd never have picked Sons of Horus Green as a highlight colour but I think it works at this scale.
A dozen 15mm early war WW2 bases with German infantry.A command base with officer, sergeant, and runner.Close up of a rifle base.Another base of five Germans advances.

The model mounted on a base with gravel PVAd to it, and loads of planks of wood scattered about

It's pretty fun coming up with some interesting mini dioramas for the base of my mega gargant.
An unpainted WIP model of a medieval peasant sat on an outhouse toilet. The outhouse has been smashed around him leaving him understandably a little confused and rather perturbed. The model outhouse and peasant in place on the base of a huge giant model striding past in the background. The giant has just knocked the top of the outhouse leaving the fortunate peasant behind.

There's nothing as satisfying as painting 15mm early war Germans, having a fluke run of good luck, and getting that sergeant's epaulette spot on.

There's a whole shelf of bits clipped off and in little storage boxes! And I'm waiting patiently for the day the transfers go up in price, I've got about 70 sheets and I usually only use the little white skulls ...

9th Platoon, 3rd Squad complete and ready to join the ranks under Watchmaster Hallerton. I painted this squad in two batches of five and it worked well - didn't burn out on them and finished just in advance of my end of September deadline.
Ten Krieg troopers, with grey greatcoats and green armour plate.A Krieg troopers with a lasgun kneels, raising his lasgun and about to take aim.Another kneels holding a meltagun at the hip.A Watchmaster, holding a chainsword up as if pointing. He is also armed with a laspistol.
