Tolkien (and other writers before and after him) would've really only done this as a show for how much they can write about their worlds or concepts, probably because they enjoyed the process more than the product. But Martin, and ESPECIALLY Rowling, are guilty of this.

Like they think they need to make the book longer to show how "good" they are at writing, and that issues of passing will be resolved for movies or shows. Which can create a bad dichotomy where people who read are expected to tolerate it more than filmgoers and the like.
