Henry Robb’s shipyard was where the Ocean Terminal now sits. It closed in the early 1980’s. It was involved in the building and fitting out of ships in WW2.

I know there was a portable hand cranked air raid siren within the Police Station in Leith Docks that was tested up until the late 1980’s. The Police Station was on the right just within the gates from Constitution Street and has now been demolished. #Leith #LeithPolice #EdinburghWalks

Really interesting read. One of the Vice Presidents of the Magdalene Asylum in the Canongate is JC Balfour of Pilrig, who I assume to be a relative of Robert Louis Stevenson too.

I think these are the premises that used to be The Night Hawk, a Chinese restaurant of some repute from the 1980’s that closed around 3:00am and was popular with the well libated parishioner with a need of some sustenance. Not me, you understand…..

I noticed that when recently in Queen Charlotte Street. Presumably named after the hardware store Spence & Spence that populated this shop space in the 1970’s and 1980’s ….. and maybe before. #Leith

I can’t disagree with you Angus. Perhaps the new windfall cash coming from the ‘hotel tax’ could help pay for the management of the gorse……

If you walk along Regent Walk on Calton Hill you can see the recovery from the 2022 fire. It seems to be pretty fast with the re-growth there.

There was also a door in Queen Charlotte Street at the eastern end of Leith Police Station that had a ‘police box’ style office inside. This was Box 7-D but was removed about 25-30 years ago when the building was refurbished and the doorway was removed. 2/2.

There are also 3 Police boxes missing from the streets of Leith. Or, at least 2 stand alone boxes; North Fort Street at the south end of the rainbow bridge (box 5-D) and Bonnington Road at Burlington Street (box 8-D). 1/2…..

The Common Spotted orchid - which I think this is, though I’m no expert - likes to grow on wet or boggy ground and by the description of where you were, I suspect you were in an area called Hunter’s Bog. Great photo.

On the first floor there was supposed to be a pedestrian walkway. You can also see this above Ann Summers, Sketchers, New Club entrance etc. This was planned to go the length of Princes Street at that level.

2/2 …as AG Bell was there. I read in an article that Tytler was lucky not to be on the martyrs monument due to his position on the UK govt and royal family before he escaped to the USA.. And then, there’s the Rangers Impartial Guide to the Ladies of Pleasure in Edinburgh……

Just a few points on Tytler; It’s said he worked as a Pharmacist somewhere in Leith (possibly The Kirkgate?) but I couldn’t find anything further. I visited Salem 11 years ago. Nothing to be seen about Tytler, lots of witch trials stuff and a plaque on how ‘America gave the world the telephone’

The search is on: Where can I get hold of black bun in Edinburgh this week before Hogmanay? I’ve tried Scotmid, Co-op, Sainsbury’s, M&S and corner shops. Our local butcher used to supply at this time of year, but no longer. Any info appreciated…… #blackbun #Edinburgh #Leith #Hogmanay

This has appeared in Fettes Avenue and the vehicles, including Police vans, appear to be parked appropriately. This street and surrounds are used as a motorhome park all year round and the pavement is regularly blocked. Do we know who is enforcing this notice? #Edinburghwalks #parking #Edinburgh
