🗺️ Trade Routes and Impacts: Our findings reveal how online trade routes are often diffuse and transnational, intertwining with traditional illegal markets, while magnifying their impacts on biodiversity and local communities.

🚚 Drivers of Trade: We investigate the socio-economic and technological factors fueling demand for illegal wildlife products. Persistent consumer demand, low perceived risks, and inadequate policies create a perfect storm for wildlife trafficking.

🌐 Online Platforms Used: The paper examines various online platforms, from social media sites to e-commerce channels, that facilitate this illegal trade and make it easily accessible to consumers worldwide.

🦥 Species and Products Involved: We analyze the vast array of wildlife, including endangered species, that are being sold online. Thousands of animal, plant, and fungal species are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation through online platforms.

Destroying wild ecosystems like these doesn't just reduce biodiversity but has repercussions for local communities losing ecosystem services as well as contributing to the climate disaster by eliminating these valuable carbon sinks. At HELICS we're examining the drivers behind trends like this.
