Claim 2: bicycles exceeded vehicular traffic on Leith Walk between 8am and 9am on Wednesday 13th May. These claims being in adjacent paragraphs is not an invitation to pick and mix them; they are not all-sorts nor cola bottles, they are facts. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Claim 1: 5,653 cycle journeys were counted on Leith Walk — by automated machines that don't care how much one strokes one's chin, and are deployed across Scotland to provide robust cycle usage data — across a 48h period on 13th & 14th May.

A person rides a bike up a sunlit street in the evening; a pedestrian waits to cross outside of a classic pub frontage for ‘The Conan Doyle’ with a black facade and golden trim, with hanging plants outside. The weather is dry, and in the background we can see rising sandstone and glass shops and offices under a blue sky, as well as the steps leading up to a cathedral building as passers-by pass by.

A large, cubed concrete block acts as a filter to allow people walking and cycling through a small street access; the block bears a blue and white ‘share space’ sign with white arrows and icons of a pedestrian and a bike. A pair of robotic legs - made with flat pieces of metal articulated at the leg joints - is set up to pedal a green bicycle, with motors and wires hanging from it. This being a museum exhibit, it is under bright illumination and the wheels are up on rollers so the bike remains in place. Visitors can press a series of buttons, out of view, to mimic the muscles used in sequence to pedal. Behind the bike are unpainted wooden silhouettes of people huddled over other bikes in a racing stance; beyond, the exposed metalwork of the center’s ceiling, glass wall and other exhibits form a backdrop.

The Facebook profile header of an 'organisation' (one bam) called 'Free Wheelers Scotland'. The cover photo for the page is divided into an AI-generated side with a queue of cars moving through rolling hills with a saltire and 'Land of the Free' with strange subtitle 'Scotland (Cars)' — in case all the cars in the image wasn't clear enough — and on the right side, 'Land of 20mph, Cycle Lanes & LEZ (Low emissions zone), which depicts a greyed-out cityscape with a green cycle lane and signs for 20mph limit, '20 is plenty', a cycleway sign, and an LEZ 'charges apply' placard. Fittingly, the account details below the banner describe that this 'political organisation' has a mere 4 followers, which is about four times the number it should have.

👀 Another TEC shambles.. CEC's administration - and those who prop it up - will talk about the sustainable transport hierarchy, safe school streets, & reducing car dominance. When was the last time we saw it reflected in the voting when crunch time comes? As Kirsty Lewin said - deeds not words.
Kirsty Lewin's post on X back on March 7th 2024 - "I can't watch TEC today but best of luck to all of those volunteers across Edinburgh who have worked so hard on deputations aimed at improving the safety and comfort of adults and children walking, wheeling and cycling in the city. Cllrs will be judged on deeds - not words."
