Visiting DC and came to see this quote at the Jefferson Memorial. I had seen it online once, it resonated with me then, but it especially resonates today as we see the system under obvious strain. Glad for an opportunity to see it in person.
A quote at the Jefferson Memorial, written in copper embeds white granite, green stains showing the age, that reads: “I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind as that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made. New truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”

We announced the new native Go FIPS 140-3 mode today! FIPS 140, like it or not, is often a requirement, and I was increasingly sad about large deployments replacing the Go crypto packages with non-memory safe cgo bindings. Go is now one of the easiest and most secure ways to build under FIPS 140.

Finally understand enough about type systems (functional knowledge) and Haskell (just enough) to fully understand "parse, don't validate." The idea is simple tho: Attach type system information at the system boundary so those invariants can be reused! lexi-lambda.github.io/blog/2019/11...

My son insists on using a kid’s toothbrush like he has at preschool, though we got him an electric one. Last night we’re brushing teeth together and suddenly he starts insisting on the electric one. I ask why and he hits me with “I want to be like you, daddy!” for the first time. Still feeling it.

Working on the seasoning to our wok this morning. Between the hammered carbon steel and the strokes of seasoning oil, it looks like a rustic painting!
A carbon steel wok held up against a blue background. The wok’s seasoning has a deep copper color that looks like brush strokes and clouds which give the pan a rustic, painterly feel.

Another misconception: That speciation is slow and that gene barriers are strong. The last portion of this podcast talks about speciation in the Galapagos after an invasive fly decimated a population of finches, happening within a human lifetime and it’s *fascinating* youtu.be/v_2LAtQKzNU?...

Six common misconceptions of speciation that are discussed in this perspective. (1) That species are clearly and consistently defined and delineated in nature, whereas in reality they are fluid arbitrary taxonomic constructs with fuzzy and semipermeable boundaries. (2) That speciation is inherently ‘good’ or the only route to evolutionary ‘success’, whereas speciation is neither goal-oriented nor the only route to ‘biological success’ however that is measured. (3) That species-poor lineages which are sister to species-rich lineages are ‘lesser’, ‘basal’, ‘ancestral’, or ‘primitive’, whereas in reality no extant lineage can be ancestral to another extant lineage and slowly speciating lineages are equally worthy of research attention as fast-speciating ones. (4) That speciation is strictly tree-like as a process and pattern, whereas genomic results reveal that it commonly appears to be network-like. (5) That factors must correlate with speciation across a broad taxonomy (in macroevolutionary studies) in order to be relevant to speciation, whereas microevolutionary studies of species pairs might reveal different factors as relevant and this should complement (and not be overruled by) the results of macroevolutionary studies. (6) That obvious trait differences between species or populations must be contributing to reproductive isolation, be a precursor to future speciation, or reflect the whole history of their divergence.

Spent the morning at Sea Life Park, a new experience for the kids! The displays were a big success, letting the kids get up close and personal with a bunch of interesting creatures.
A photo where the left third is a young boy with his face right up against a plexiglass barrier, and the other two thirds is a tall aquarium display teeming with fish, giving the sense that the boy is peering into a barely contained ocean.

This. I've thought about this a ton, and I've come to firmly believe the solution to AI scraping lies in legal, not technical, measures. Adding limitations to who can access websites undermine the fundamental principles of the open web. When you lock AI out of the web, you end up locking up the web.

A fellow /r/Hawaii mod and SWE’s 8 year old has requested a gaming rig for Christmas. Instead of a 40XX-based machine, I’m trying to convince him to get an rPi 5 and a copy of “Code the Classics.” It can technically do 4k gaming! (He may put this under the tree then unveil the PC after 😂)

Happy #AlohaFriday! Did you know that Casual Fridays evolved from Aloha Fridays? In the 1960s, the Hawaiian Fashion Guild campaigned to have employers let men wear aloha shirts to work on Fridays to support Hawaii’s garment industry. By 1970, aloha attire became everyday business wear in Hawaii!
