I'm cynical but passionate and optimistic about the future. I'm into landscape fauna ecology especially in the arid and semi arid zones. 😁 PS not a huge fan of cat and puppy photos.

I've been using this method of cooking as a replacement for aluminium foil. Wet scrunched up baking paper. It works well with everything I've attempted so far, including baked sweet potato. Now to fund a baking paper that is recycled and recyclable.

A thought. #mentalwellbeing #natureawareness #peopleneedcountry
For years I have been pondering on the trope country needs people. I just couldn't understand why people would think country needs them, given people only evolved in the last 6 mil years, and modern humans have only been around for ~ 800k years. Yet life evolved on this plant 4 bil years ago, so humans have only been on this rock for a blink of an eye. The planet has not needed humans previously, nor does it now, nor will it in the future.
So why this concept that country need people? Country, the planet did more than OK without people for so very very very long. This rock hosted huge changes in ecosystems, landscapes, and the evolution and extinction of so many species.
Then I thought back to how being on country makes me feel. I recall the look on colleague's faces when they are immersed in country. Those wide eyes eager for discovery. The increasing awareness of their surroundings and time passed. The grins of joy at seeing and experiencing what country can give them. The joy at looking at flowers, or seeing kangaroos feeding on native grasslands. The immense joy of just sitting down in silence and taking country in with every breath.
It is only then, I came to realise, Country DOES NOT need People, BUT People NEED Country.
Not only do people need country for their survival but also for their mental and spiritual well-being. The serenity and perspective country imbues onto the human psyche is wondrous.
I am not talking just of 1st Nations who still have that connection to country, but all Australians whose faces light up when immersed in country. Even the most ardent concrete jungle hominid eventually melds into the natural wonder of country.
So for the time we are here, it would be nice to keep country healthy and in good repair so it can bring us joy. Let us become more aware of why all the profits one could achieve can never provide the solace and peace of being immersed in the grandeur of country. Country really does not need people, but people need country

For all the neophyte environmental consultants, ecologists and biologists, this is a much more realistic #EIA risk management pyramid for your reference. (there is a little more in the alt text).
This is a diagram of an inverse 3/4 risk pyramid. The tip of the pyramid is very small and refers to the use of offsets. To explain further. Generally, in a typical risk pyramid all sections are given equal height. It relays a sense of common shared importance only modified by the tapering of the pyramid to its tip. This particular pyramid places most of the emphasis on avoidance as the most important risk management measure. This is followed by, in even smaller bands, minimise, reduce and mitigate, and with the aforementioned tiny reference to offsets. As we go from avoidance to offsets on this pyramid we also find the qualities of these risk management options also decrease. To the left, I have declared the 3 more important aspects of risk management which decrease as we move from Avoidance to Offsets. These being, Preference (Avoidance is always preferred), Scientific Rigour (as we travel into offsets, there is less science and more speculation and convenience), and Ecological viability (impacts will threaten the ecological viability of any receiving environment, with offsets having no measurable value in maintaining ecological viability).

Without a chin we would never have "The Thinker".
An image of Augusta Rodin's famous statue, the Thinker. It depicts a man sitting on a rock leaning forward with his chin resting on his hand in deep thought - hence without a chin, this statue could never be possible.

Here is a quote from the early 20teens that befits the climate in which we find ourselves:
This is meme featuring a quote from Hajo Meyer, a polymath and Auschwitz Survivor who saw the dangers of Zionism very early. This is from an interview taken in 2010-11 and it should be taken in the context of a bigger discussion in that interview on Zionism: "Formerly an anti-Semite was somebody who hated Jews because they were Jews and had a Jewish soul. But nowadays an anti-Semite is somebody who is hated by Jews."

I begin work next week and was thinking of lunches. I'm not a fan of junk food, so I thought I would make myself some Caponata. It's difficult dish to explain to non-Italians, but believe me it is delicious and so very colourful. I would recommend looking up 1 of the million variations of this dish.
Caponata being made. The olives, capers, celery are being added to cooke tomatoes, onions, and zucchini (which is not a traditional ingredient, but I like it). Once this cooks down a lottle, red wine vinegar and sugar is added and stirred in, followed by the cubed eggplants which have been fried off earlier.

It reminds me most of the words of Hajo Meyer as depicted in this meme. This is taken from an interview in 2010 (he passed away in 2014) and it is as relevant today as it was 15 years ago.
A quote from Hajo Meyer, a polymath, physicist and Auschwitz survivor:

"The Israeli government exploits the Holocaust to justify the unjustifiable: the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. It is an insult to the memory of the victims of Auschwitz. Zionism today is not Judaism. Zionism represents a betrayal of the universal values that Judaism stands for."

As someone who wanted his archaeologist stripes at one time, this makes me laugh.
Cartoon with a stick man standing in front of a screen showing a stone arrowhead on the left and a copper arrowhead on the right. He states "In the process of analyzing paleolithic stone tool making, I've stumbled on an improved technique for producing points and blades. Instead of stone, my method is based on the heating and shaping of copper ore."

Below the cartoon, the caption reads "Too late, I realized that my entire archaeology dissertation had been based on a colossal misunderstanding."

Bit of a bummer for the SW. Seems a lot of careless people - all fires so far either begun by humans either accidentally or deliberately.
Western Australian Emergency map for the afternoon of 30 December 2025, showing 6 bushfires in the south west of the State, all of which were lit deliberately or accidentally by humans. Currently we are talking a few thousand hectares, although two are still raging. There are other fires burning further south and north (Western Australia is a very large State - 2,527,013 square kilometres, and all fire prone.

Bugger. One of my favourite National Parks is under threat from a bushfire. It seems to always coincide with the tourist/holiday seasons. This is a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot. Unfortunately, bushfire is common during holiday/tourist seasons.

Utterly shocking.
In contrast to the slightly sarcastic post text, this photo shows the beauty of King George Sound, Albany, Western Australia. The photo was taken from an elevated position overlooking coastal heath shrubland onto a granite lined coast and out to the sound. The deep blue sea and deep blue sky are delineated by a line of clouds separating the two.

This is the subtle, but clear difference between reporting of rapes in this country. The Age headline is focused on the victim and her response when confronting her attacker. The West Australian/The Nightly instead just wants to emphasise the attacker is "suicidal". Oh and the victim broke down.
A headline from The Age newspaper which focuses on the victim: "Tom Silvagni, you raped me: Victim says she will carry trauma for the rest of her life"A corresponding headline in a conservative media platform, The West Australian and the Nightly (owned by the same people). The headline reads: "Rape victim breaks down as she confronts suicidal Tom Silvagni". This headline emphasises the state of the attacker more so than the victim and is typical of the manosphere misogyny that grips these cesspits of fragile male egos.

This is the Esperance region. An overworked, high input, massive area of monoculture resulting from intensive industrialised farming. In one of the most biodiverse areas in Oz, whatever remnant native bush is held in conservation parks. Poor agricultural land management is the problem.
A google map screen shot of the Esperance regions showing the massive levels of clearing replaced with monoculture crops, which have resulted in fires spreading through the region at very high speed. The problem is poor land management.

Now comes the tricky part of drawing on the regular octagon, masking and cutting. I think I sweated bullets in the cutting phase, but go a very nice result. Now to think about what sort of design to put on the table top (I did think veneer inlay, but I think I need lots of practice before then).

I'm always in awe of the cucina povera of the Mediterranean. With 4 ingredients (tomatoes, capers, mint, small clove of garlic), voila, salsa con caperi e mente. It comes from the SE of Sicily. The best pasta match is something short (e.g. casarecce). Wine is never optional. 10/10 min prep/cooking.
