Though the ‘City of London’ is one square mile of nearly 2,000 square miles of Greater London and there’s much more work to do - a London cyclist

How many private member’s bills has Corbyn got through in 40 years as an MP? 0 compared to say @stellacreasy.bsky.social whose PMBs have shut exploitative payday loan shops and legalised gay marriage and women’s health care in NI in a fraction of time in Parliament - tells you all you need to know

This was part of problem with Corbyn’s Labour - more interested in performative gestures than real change - now lots of the same people have taken over the Greens with the same results

Like privatised water this is a terrible way to manage national infrastructure

Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I invested in a solar farm called Derrill Water - it has spent its first (very sunny) summer of operation unable to feed into grid because the infrastructure isn’t there - incredibly frustrating- this should be a higher priority given it could reduce costs, pollution and energy insecurity

You know what isn’t running low? Sunshine, wind, tides - now is the time to electrify everything and power it with renewables- cleaner, more secure energy at a lower cost

Enough of this dependency on poisonous, climate changing, destabilising form of energy - let’s sprint to electrify and power it all with secure, clean renewables and batteries

My neighbour works for NHS Digital (as was) - I could hear him in his shed helping to build the IT infrastructure to get everyone vaccine appointments- a very impressive and life saving bit of work

Quite, silence appeals to no-one - we are back to ‘island of strangers’ driving voters to both right (and twice as many) left

Great thread - despair is the enemy - hope is a super power against tyranny

So, there’s been no arrests of these men violently assaulting a woman on camera and none of the masked men who blocked the Port of Dover - if they’d been climate change or Palestine protesters I suspect a different response

‘Almost 53%’ would be 52% v 48% - cursed ration strikes again

I was a print journalist trained in media law and have thought this for a long time - all publishers regardless of medium should be held to same standards

Imagine the good that could be achieved with a full UK transition to renewably powered electric transport (plus much more active travel) heating and industry? Less pollution, illness, energy insecurity and cost to consumers

Am on hols in Greece and its striking that every cabbie (not necessarily a representative sample I know) I’ve spoken to is angrily anti immigrant and wants a ‘strong man like Putin’ to ‘restore order’. Online Russian and allied far right propaganda has rotted western minds against our own interests

Great response. My 14yrold son was diagnosed with ADHD after relentless punishment in 1st 2 years of secondary school alienated him and ruined his confidence. Meds didn’t work but a year in special school being treated compassionately has, suggesting that improving environment can really help some

We got the wrong mayor as PM

Notable that Burnham, with more political capital than Khan, turned down hundreds of millions of pounds for a GM clean air zone because of lobbying by cabbies

People can feel effects of climate crisis, now is best possible moment to announce doubling down on Net Zero with full electrification powered by renewables and batteries built and maintained by UK’s post industrial towns - lower pollution/bills and greater energy security/quality jobs
000
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I invested over £1k in a West Country solar farm - none of the energy it is producing this first, exceptionally sunny, summer can be used as the grid can’t cope - there was years to plan for this but it never happened - pathetic
020
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
We’ve been fully electric (cooking, heating, car) for two years all powered by our solar panels and 100% renewable tariff - lower bills, pollution and better quality of life (house is warmer in winter)

And even with all those caveats it has worsened over last 50 years, which is all that really matters to most people alive now

Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
As GM Mayor Burnham turned down hundreds of millions of funding for a clean air zone - I really worry this is a sign of things to come - apart from anything else it makes it harder to win back voters from Greens
020
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Along with apparent ‘drill baby drill’ this is terrible - immoral, no economic sense and politically stupid as Labour has lost twice as many voters to left parties than right
000
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Announcing more oil and gas drilling during a climate change caused heat wave that has killed thousands is immoral, will do nothing to lower energy prices, create sustainable jobs or win back millions of voters lost to Greens in cities and uni towns

We also need to reduce cars of sorts including EVs. More electric trains and buses and more cycling and walking infrastructure

Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I did similar - got up at 6am, no one looked at phones, no radio, muted TV to turn on for watch again and on Home Screen is says ‘England qualify for quarter finals’ !

Graham is backed by the SWP which believes Net Zero is a ‘market driven illusion’ - no Labour prime minister, or anyone else, should listen to her

I remember that day - I was in a mosque in Tower Hamlets (where I work as a public health manager) experiencing a much stronger sense of community among people born in many different countries than I ever did in my very white British, home town. Totally lost my support

He refused hundreds of millions of pounds of central government money to create a Greater Manchester clean air zone because he was lobbied by cabbies - this worries me
010
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
You are so right - hold social media platforms responsible (like we do print and broadcast media) not children and families. My artist teenage daughter, who just did wardrobe for a short film premiered in a cinema, started by making TikTok films

Was also dismayed by Streeting attacking modest investment in walking and cycling which as former health secretary you would hope he knows would save more money than it costs in improved health outcomes.

Given Burnham refused hundreds of millions of central government investment for a Greater Manchester clean air zone because a few cabbies complained i wouldn’t hold your breath

‘Absolutely no-one is disagreeing’ …apart from Hockney quoted in that article arguing against science and policy designed to protect people after millions of painful deaths. Hockney had many qualities, his views on smoking are not one of them and no one benefits from headlining them so prominently
110
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
Yes I did - the headline (which is what most people will read) paints smoking in a positive light - smoking ads are banned for a very good reason
110
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
I’m criticising the Guardian for choosing to highlight, in a positive way, smoking, which kills millions and does immense environmental harm when they could have headlined Hockney’s many useful contributions and views. That’s a poor and irresponsible editorial decision. Anyway have good day
100
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
There’s a lot of evidence that smoking is terrible for mental health including depression and psychosis- one wouldn’t promote art advice from a public health scientist in an international newspaper and it shouldn’t promote factually incorrect health advice from artists either
100
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
The Guardian could of chosen many aspects of his love of life to demonstrate this point including being openly gay, his move to California, use of colour, fashion sense and dancing none of which kill millions of people
110
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
That’s really not a reason for the Guardian to promote smoking
110
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
Like you say he wasn’t a ‘wellness influencer’ or expert so focus on the art and not the dodgy health opinions romanticising smoking which kills people and does massive environmental damage.
210
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
A wonderful artist - what a pity that instead of focusing on his creativity and contribution you choose to advertise cigarettes which kill millions, even if Hockney wasn’t one of them
180
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
massive problem current leader/government has is to communicate challenge/strategy. A better strategic thinker/communicator would definitely do better. current strategic objective is ‘economic growth’ which is a means to and end not an objective, v hard to deliver and doesn’t give anyone hope
020
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
Agree but fares in London are cheapest in UK and free for <18s and >60s. Since Conservative Government massively cut TfL grant it has been hard to balance books as it is. Would support increasing ULEZ and congestion charge to pay for even cheaper public transport and walking and cycling support
010
Ed Davie @eddavie.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
If we invested this in UK made systems wouldn’t the fiscal multiplier effect more than pay for itself though? See also investing in UK made renewables
