Not by the Book: How growth really happens 📅 Wednesday, 11 March ⏰ 17:00 – 18:00 GMT 📍 luma.com/iqeq3858 Growth is often framed as speed, scale, or shipping more. But in reality, growth looks very different. 1/5

"High performance" is one of the most abused terms in business. It's vague enough to mean anything. Boards love it because it sounds strategic. Senior leaders love it because it gives them cover to fire people fast and call it "raising the bar." 1/8

Slack: where work happens. Also where focus dies. AI: the same thing, but worse. Slack fragmented your attention across 47 channels and a red dot that never goes away. AI fragments it across your entire job PMs start writing code because now they can Designers do their own data analysis 1/9

Stop waiting to be empowered. Start taking ownership. I hear this constantly: • "We're not empowered." • "Leadership won't let us make decisions." • "The org isn't set up for us to succeed" And from CEOs, the mirror image: • "They don't take ownership" 1/6

You're making decisions about AI every day. But you've never built anything with it. That's not a knowledge gap. It's an experience gap. And it changes how you lead. Our 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜 course closes it in 4 weeks. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: 1/6

You don't have a discovery problem. You have a logistics problem. Most product teams know they should speak to users regularly. Few actually do it. Not because they don't care. Because every conversation requires recruiting, screening, scheduling, prepping, and analysing. 1/8

"I think we should do X" invites people to disagree with you. Personally "This is what I understand we're trying to achieve" invites people to collaborate Same content. Completely different dynamic When you present strategy or recommendations, the framing matters as much as the substance 1/9

Most people use ChatGPT like a search engine. One question, one answer. That's the worst way to use it. LLMs default to the average of all their training data. Without structure, you get something technically correct but completely beige. 1/8

Your CEO changed priorities again. The team is frustrated. Nothing shipped last quarter. This is common in startups where CEOs feel they should "stay agile." But it creates a vicious cycle: → Priorities change every few weeks → Features get rushed out without discovery 1/8

85% of product work isn't needed. At least, not any time soon. At the companies I've worked at, product teams spend roughly 10-20% of their time on 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱: critical bugs, urgent client requests, software patches. Stop doing that and the business breaks within weeks. 1/9

Most product development fails because teams spend months building features nobody want. 5 pillars I rely on to de-risk product decisions: 𝟭 - 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • Building products is expensive • PMs exist to maximise return on that investment • Not every feature needs the same validation 1/10

For most companies, going "product-led" is a complete disaster, and they soon revert to a feature factory. It's a predictable pattern: • Product teams cheer. • Leadership steps back. • Accountability quietly disappears. • Then… it all blows up. WHAT COMPANIES THINK THEY ARE DOING 1/9

It's not about the PRD. The whole discussion about PRDs vs. vibe coding is missing the point. It's about thinking clearly and sharing your thinking efficiently with humans and AI. This is a fundamental skill that won't go out of date. And it's exactly what you need to work with AI. 1/9

Your product team costs roughly £1 million a year to run. Every sprint planning is a £40K investment decision. A week is £20K you can't spend elsewhere. Most PMs never think about it this way. And that's a problem. 1/9

Agile ceremonies were always problematic. They started as patterns. Ways people interpreted the Agile Manifesto into practical meetings. But over time they became rigid, by-the-book process. Which is the opposite of agile. Go read the 12 principles. 1/9

Most AI productivity hacks you see on LinkedIn don't work. They work for one person, on their own laptop, with no one else involved. That's not your reality. Your reality is shared Google Docs with 14 contributors. Confluence pages that need sign-off. Jira boards your whole team reads. 1/10

You’re overthinking quarterly planning. Most quarterly plans fail because people treat them like strategy resets. They’re not. Quarterly planning is about 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, not reinvention. And when you get that wrong, everything feels heavier than it needs to be. 1/8

Fighting for autonomy is a sign of immaturity, not competence. Immature PMs often: • Fight for autonomy. • Want to call the shots. • Want product to decide everything. But you never get to do exactly what you want. • CEOs have boards and investors • Freelancers have clients 1/4

You've heard evals are important. But you don't really know what they are. Let's fix that. Evals = QA for AI. But AI is probabilistic — same input, different output every time. Traditional testing doesn't work. Evals = QA for non-deterministic systems 1/7

Most product leaders have no idea if their teams are actually on track. They set the strategy. Hired the people. Kicked off the work. Then... silence until launch day. This is like building a printer and never checking if the colours are aligned. 1/9
