Hey, trans archivists: if someone already had copies of certain censored reports from a major organisation earlier this year, but was looking for a copy of the 11-page technical explanation behind the methodology of one of them... Who might have it? (Sheesh. What a time we live in.)

Telling transphobes that they forgot about trans men makes for a snappy “gotcha” moment. But it doesn’t fix anything—in fact, it plays right into the way transmisogyny deals with transmasculinity. So this week, I wrote about the “gotcha” problem.

Trans men are not your “gotcha”.
Using transmasculinity to score points doesn’t fight transmisogyny—it perpetuates it.

Important🧵from Cal at the coal face. “the school staff cried” doesn’t move me any more, it angers me, as they proceed to act on govt policy and cause harm. Streeting told me, meeting the trans youth whose medication he’d removed was “really upsetting for me, really hard”. We need more than tears.

Rather than being cited as an excuse to remove our healthcare, and therefore protect third parties from their own anxieties, this study demonstrates the need for increased psychological support for loved ones of those pursuing medical transition.

This is a storytelling archetype, a compelling but age-old tale of parents discovering that their own imagination of their child’s future doesn’t match that child’s desires.

The popularity of this study amongst media, doctors, lawmakers, and the public indicates a willingness to believe in the story of an alarming onslaught of “girls” transitioning into trans boys (or adult women transitioning into men).

Therefore, what it accidentally did was describe parents who were committed to viewing their trans child’s self-actualization as a source of grief. The term “rapid-onset gender dysphoria” describes a paternalistic anxiety about losing control over the bodies and choices of women and girls.

The study claimed to diagnose trans children, yet the subjects were actually parents of trans adolescents or adults (aged 16, on average), recruited online through anti-transgender forums.

It’s justified through one particular study about “Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria” (ROGD), a debunked myth of socially fashionable and contagious transgender identity.

The “social contagion” panic posits that the increasing number of transmasculine people are misled women trying to escape misogyny, and will ultimately change their minds.

"The assumption that trans men attain male privilege stops trans men and our allies from noticing when our bodily autonomy is not respected." I’m back with the first in a series of short essays highlighting the transmasculine theory I’m writing about in my book EXILED.

This fight over “should authors get paid for their work” debate boils down to this: many, MANY people do not see art as labor. If art isn’t labor, then you don’t have to change your political views to justify piracy. Easy peasy!

The thing about so-called generative artificial intelligence is, the intelligence isn't artificial. It's real. It's OURS. The techbros stole our intelligence (our data, our thoughts, our stories, our art) and used the software to regurgitate it and spackle it together into digital particleboard.

A mostly blank page with the words Strong and Free, from the English version of the Canadian national anthem )

Don't Hesitate, by Mary Oliver.

If You suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give in to it. It. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that's often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

Introducing Rena Yehuda Newman… my husband. 💖 I can’t describe how proud and happy I am. The last few years have been the hardest of my life; Rena Yehuda has been my cornerstone. Even after a decade of writing happy endings, I keep discovering what it means to love and be loved so well.
Rena Yehuda, dressed in a blue suit with a pale gold yarmulke, putting a ring on Ed’s finger; Ed has pink hair and is wearing in a white dress with pink and blue flowers. Both are smiling joyfully.Holding hands, with everything else out of focus; Rena is wearing a gold wedding ring, and Ed is wearing a silver and ruby ring. Two people kissing in front of a mini storage building with New York skyline and traffic in the background. Ed has pink hair and a blue puffer jacket over a white floral dress; Rena is in a blue suit with red leather jacket and earmuffs. Both are popping one foot behind them. Ed and Rena sealing their marriage with a kiss; Ed has pink hair, glasses, and hearing aids, and is wearing a floral white dress. Rena is dressed in a blue suit with red shirt and pale gold yarmulke. The officiant, holding a guitar, is smiling in the background.

Uh oh. I only willingly consume peppermint at 2am in the hospital when I’m a gas giant. And I grew up with Red Dye Number Twizzler, then was shocked by black liquorice (as Europe calls it, liquorice). Placed my bets and hopes on red… This was sweet, mellow, delightful. Would actually buy. What???

This one took some faffing to let the water cool, but it was worth it. Various tea shops have pitched (overpriced) floral visions of these pearls blossoming brightly in my cup. Does the pitch still work on me? Yes. Is this a solid green tea? Also yes. Pleasing, but not joyous.

This smells healthy, yet relaxing. Strange if you’ve missed several days and are drinking multiple cups in a row, like being thrown headlong from Christmas Eve into a Mediterranean summer break. But also not unpleasant—a little sour, which keeps it from being cloying.

But patriarchy must keep us objects and not subjects. Framing us as women who want to be men justifies all manner of harm because, “you said you want this”. Men who already feel entitled to do violence to women privately can do so in public; women are given permission by the gender traitor model.

Ed Davies @edaviesauthor.bsky.social · 29/11/2024
There is no consideration that what other people “understand” about why we “want to be” men might not resemble our actual desire in the slightest. Obviously, it also assumes that our desire is to resemble or recreate the dominant society’s cis version of manhood.
