We’re hiring. Two roles. One super-duper awesome remote team. Do you get genuinely excited when a workshop runs on time? → Labs and Residencies Manager might be your thing. Do you have a sixth sense for scheduling conflicts? → Executive Administrative Partner has your name on it.

I'm so thrilled to share the cover art for our edited collection, A Rhetorical Arboretum, which will be published next year (slated for June 2027) as part of The Ohio State UP's series on New Directions in Rhetoric and Materiality.
ook cover for A Rhetorical Arboretum, edited by Joshua Trey Barnett, Jennifer Clary-Lemon, and Madison P. Jones. The cover features a vintage botanical illustration of an arboretum with a dense variety of trees in shades of green, gold, and brown. The title and editors’ names appear above the trees against a pale green and cream textured background.

Thrilled to share that our article, "Visualizing Environments: Toward A Natural History of Science Communication" is available from the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication as part of a special issue on aesthetics in scientific/technical communication, doi.org/10.1177/0047...
First page of the article “Visualizing Environments: Toward A Natural History of Science Communication” by Madison Percy Jones, Morgan C. Banville, and Leah Heilig, published online in the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication in 2026. The page includes the article title and authors, publication and DOI information, an abstract describing the role of environmental aesthetics, field-based practices, and natural history in science communication pedagogy.

Abstract
To illustrate how environmental aesthetics shape present-day science communication pedagogy, this article situates contemporary science communication in the context of the American environmental writing tradition, drawing from the field reporting techniques of William Bartram as a form of artist’s study. We use teaching case examples to demonstrate how the aesthetic experience of scientific knowledge—the acts of etching, visiting, feeling, and being in nature—ultimately contributes to better practices and pedagogy for technical illustrations, as well as more accessible entry points for scientific and technical communicators and their audiences. We present such examples of field-based writing, visualization, and multimodal projects from an undergraduate environmental writing course and a graduate science writing course to locate the role of aesthetics in natural history and contemporary science communication, contributing to a deeper engagement with the field’s interdisciplinary history.

"Just as monstrous and mutant algae invade the lagoon of Venice, so our television screens are populated, saturated, by 'degenerate' images and statements. In the field of social ecology, men like Donald Trump are permitted to proliferate freely, like another species of algae, taking over entire districts of New York and Atlantic City; he 'redevelops' by raising rents, thereby driving out tens of thousands of poor families, most of whom are condemned to homelessness, becoming the equivalent of the dead fish of environmental ecology." --Felix Guattari, The Three Ecologies, p 43.

I have a new poem, "Vernal Pool, West Kingston Town Dump," out in ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment. This piece is about the North Woods at URI, a place with an interesting and complex history. doi.org/10.1093/isle... @asle-us.bsky.social
Image of the poem, "Vernal Pool, West Kingston Town Dump"
Poem Text:
Up the hill from the Superfund site,
where remediated gravel folds into
remnants of colonial settlements,
themselves folded into a place far older
and more hallowed than we know,
where the mountain laurel gives way
to a soft patch of pines that diffuse the wind
and birdsong and the sound of not-so-far-
away machines, laying foundations
for a new age that will never arrive,
an ancient pair of tire tracks
became a mud pit, a murky ditch that floods
each spring, just off the worn roadway
to the old West Kingston Town Dump,
where amphibians and bugs find asylum
in the symmetry of night and day,
just as the temperature shifts and the rain
sets in, across uncounted seasons
of hum and egg and thaw, burgeoning
like tree rings each in turn:
spadefoot, peeper, pickerel,
green frog, tree frog, wood frog, bullfrog,
hatch alongside nymphs
of dragonfly and fairy shrimp—
all blossom in the refuge of this muddy rut,
and above them, a barred owl observes
with patience another fecund season,
drone of mosquito and cicada chorus,
water seeping below poisoned ground,
a song heard without listening.

STEEP is seeking users and feedback for our original augmented reality experience, PFAS Kitchen. Take a virtual adventure and learn more about PFAS in your home!

The purpose of this part of the study is to explore the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in science communication and understanding consumer behavior, specifically about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Participants will be guided through a pre-survey, augmented reality (AR) experience using Adobe Aero, and a post-survey. To be eligible, participants must be between the ages of 18 and 80, have access to a personal mobile device, and are physically and cognitively able to navigate online surveys and an augmented reality platform. There are no direct benefits to the participant. Participation will help advance research for educational technology and increase understanding of knowledge and use of PFAS in the home.

Interested in participating? Read more on the STEEP website.

This 30-minute research experience can be accessed at your convenience, in your own space with your personal mobile device. Data will be analyzed by University of Rhode Island Researchers Madison Jones, PhD (principal investigator; madisonjones@uri.edu) and Jaclyn Witterschein (co-investigator, jwitterschein@uri.edu). This research has been approved by The University of Rhode Island Institutional Review Board.
