Graphical abstract: A flexible detection model, VREHT, is proposed for grouped line-transect distance sampling. Through simulation studies and real datasets, the model demonstrates improved fit, reduced bias, and enhanced estimation accuracy compared to traditional detection functions such as half normal and hazard rate.

#OpenAccess Mechanistic-Statistical Inference of Mosquito Dynamics From Mark-Release-Recapture Data Nga Nguyen et al ▶️ doi.org/10.1002/1438... Aedes aegypti/ Brownian motion/ maximum likelihood/ reaction–diffusion
Graphical abstract: Mark-release-recapture data contain valuable information on mosquito dispersal and survival, but this information is only indirectly observed through trap counts. We combine a mechanistic diffusion model with a statistical observation model to infer movement, mortality, and trap efficiency jointly. Applied to sterile male Aedes aegypti released in an urban field experiment in Cuba, this approach yields interpretable field estimates that are useful for the design of release-based control strategies.

Graphical abstract: AIC and its modified version, AICc, have been widely used in ecology for data analysis, including the generalized linear models (GLMs). When the null model is true, the error rate when selecting a model using AIC or AICc is analyzed numerically.

Graphical abstract: We removed the most critical connection(s) of experimental habitat networks inhabited by Daphnia carinata to completely separate them into two sub-networks. The results showed reduced population size and stability across different topologies after the loss of connectivity. The results suggest that losing key connections can greatly increase extinction risk of populations in habitat networks.

#OpenAccess Demographic Responses to Experimental Manipulation of an Enclosed Population of Invasive Brown Treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) Amanda M. Kissel et al doi.org/10.1002/1438... Bayesian statistics/ invasive species control/ population growth rate/ Pradel model
Graphical abstract: We evaluated demographic responses of an enclosed population of brown treesnakes to two experimental perturbations: supplemental feeding followed by removal of the adult and sub-adult cohort 2 years later. Our results indicate that adding food to the system increased the population growth rate by 50% within 6 months and that removing the adults and large sub-adults temporarily suppressed growth and survival; however, the population growth rate recovered within a year. These findings provide insight into population dynamics that may influence current control efforts on the island of Guam and any future invasions into new areas.

Effects of Insect Herbivores With Different Feeding Modes on the Exotic Plant Solidago altissima: Changes in Induced Responses and Resource Allocation Ida Kollberg, Noboru Katayama, Takayuki Ohgushi x.gd/fH8le Corythucha marmorata/ Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum
Graphical abstract: This study examined how the exotic plant Solidago altissima responds to herbivory by two insect species with contrasting feeding modes: sap-feeding aphids and mesophyll-feeding lace bugs. Using a greenhouse experiment, we measured plant growth, water content, elemental composition, and phenolics across leaves, stems, and roots. Lace bug herbivory markedly reduced leaf dry mass and stem water content and altered nitrogen allocation patterns, including a reduced proportion of nitrogen allocated to leaves. In contrast, aphid herbivory caused no significant changes. These results indicate that S. altissima exhibits stronger physiological responses to mesophyll-feeding lace bugs than to aphids.

Graphical abstract: In this study, we examined the relationships between land cover, food supply, and the diet composition of breeding Eurasian sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) and tested the effect of several prey species characteristics on the sparrowhawks' prey selection. Land cover affected the structure of food supply as well as the sparrowhawks' diet composition. Intermediate body mass, lower population density, and brighter plumage colouration of prey species were associated with increased vulnerability to sparrowhawk predation.

<SPECIAL FEATURE> #BrownBear Population Management Estimation of the Number of Nuisance Bears in the Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido Hifumi Tsuruga, Mami Kondo, Tsutomu Mano doi.org/10.1002/1438... condition by harmfulness/ conflict indicator/ damage and occurrence reports #OpenAccess
Graphical abstract: In this study, we aimed to estimate the number of nuisance bears based on damage and occurrence reports collected from 2009 to 2023 in the Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido. For the estimation, we assessed the harmfulness level (from Condition 0 to 3) of the bears based on the details of the reports and developed a method to remove double or more overcounts of a bear derived from multiple reports on the same single bear. Estimating the number of nuisance individuals involved in conflict by setting a specific criterion provides a more valuable evaluation indicator for adaptive management than simply using the number of occurrences alone.

Graphical Abstract: The mathematical approach of balancing removes distortion due to population structure for transient population analysis, but some distortion is the result of true biological processes. Using a large dataset of matrix population models from plants and animals, we demonstrate that balancing changes biological interpretation of demographic resilience (a transient analysis). We argue that meaningful comparisons require tailored approaches that respect the structure and context of demographic data.

Graphical abstract: We investigate the seasonal dynamics of two freshwater snails, Biomphalaria straminea and Melanoides tuberculata, in artificial reservoirs of the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite regulated hydrology, B. straminea exhibited strong seasonal fluctuations associated with dry periods, while M. tuberculata maintained stable populations throughout the year, reflecting contrasting ecological strategies. These patterns are especially relevant for understanding how native and invasive species respond to climate seasonality in human-altered freshwater environments.

This study introduces a new R package, occumb, for the convenient application of site occupancy modeling using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding data. We outline a data analysis workflow, including data setup, model fitting, model assessment, and comparison of potential study settings based on model predictions, all of which can be performed using the package. An example application targeting aquatic insects highlights the effectiveness of using biological replicates to minimize false-negative results in species detection.

This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century. The analysis of transient dynamics, which occur after environmental disturbances, helped to better understand the discrepancies between observed field growth and theoretical estimates based on population models, revealing disruptions in age structure likely due to past rat predation.
