3/ First NOAA coral report to try pricing the unpriceable: cultural identity, intergenerational knowledge, spiritual ties to place. Incomplete by design, but a real first attempt at putting it on the books.

2/ Biodiversity value: $8.4B/year. Per acre, USVI and Hawaiʻi reefs pencil out above $2,600-3,000/acre/year. An acre of reef is out-earning a lot of real estate.

1/ NOAA priced U.S. coral reefs. Storm protection benefits alone: $1.25B/year, nationally. Same valuation method used for highway and flood studies, not a marketing number. 🧵 🌊🦑 #econsky 🌏 #marinelife 📷 Kimberly Jeffries / Ocean Image Bank

Mangroves and seagrass store up to 5x more carbon than forests on land. The ocean absorbs about 90% of the excess heat from greenhouse emissions. None of that works if the ocean destabilizes. Climate and ocean health are one issue. #marinelife 🦑 #greensky 🌊 🎥UN Ocean Decade

4/ The caveat: 10%+ of the ocean is "protected" on paper. Only ~3.3% is protected in the water. To hit 30x30 we'd need to effectively protect an area the size of the Indian Ocean in under 4 years. Progress is real. So is the math.
Infographic chart showing the growth of marine protected areas worldwide from 0.7% of the global ocean in 2000 to 10% in 2026. A solid blue line tracks reported protection coverage, while a dashed green line shows the pace needed to reach the international 30×30 goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. A dashed orange line illustrates a slower trajectory reaching only about 13% by 2030 at recent rates. An annotation notes that only 3.3% of the ocean is currently fully protected. The graphic emphasizes both significant progress and the large gap remaining to meet global conservation targets.

Oakland’s climate stripes are closest to home. Pleasanton Ridge, Cowell’s, Natural Bridges, Point Lobos: the places my kids and I love. The 2014-16 marine heatwave already gutted kelp forests here. Already happened, not a forecast. Insurance already ran the math on this coast. #ShowYourStripes

89% of voters support plug-in solar. 84% of conservative Republicans. 96% of liberal Democrats. The trick to getting these approved and passed in so many states (including deep red Utah) it's not pitched as a climate policy. It's pitched as a lower power bill. That crosses every line there is.

wp.me/pfuM3b-7H The honest version of balcony / plugin solar: It won't zero out your bill, but it will shave it down, roughly $180 to $800 a year depending on your rate. But if you are a renter (like I am), skip the contractor, and you can take it with you when you move.

Plugin (or balcony) solar was illegal in all 50 states 18 months ago. Today it's legal in 8, and 89% of Americans support it. It's a panel you hang on a railing and plug into a wall outlet. No roof, no $30k, renters welcome. What it is and where your state stands👇

Thank you for sharing that! Yes, it is SO relevant. now, when environmental and climate communications is needed more than ever, the foundations for doing it better, and backed by evidence from social science and behavioral psychology (like Marshall's book) have to be circulated/socialize to the max

It is my pleasure, reading Marshall's book has been on my to do list for too long. He has such great insights from his research. and there are so many of us out here who can greatly benefit from his (and other researchers) that i'm on a mission to socialize it more
