Mangroves and seagrass store up to 5x more carbon than forests on land. The ocean absorbs about 90% of the excess heat from greenhouse emissions. None of that works if the ocean destabilizes. Climate and ocean health are one issue. #marinelife 🦑 #greensky 🌊 🎥UN Ocean Decade

4/ The caveat: 10%+ of the ocean is "protected" on paper. Only ~3.3% is protected in the water. To hit 30x30 we'd need to effectively protect an area the size of the Indian Ocean in under 4 years. Progress is real. So is the math.
Infographic chart showing the growth of marine protected areas worldwide from 0.7% of the global ocean in 2000 to 10% in 2026. A solid blue line tracks reported protection coverage, while a dashed green line shows the pace needed to reach the international 30×30 goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. A dashed orange line illustrates a slower trajectory reaching only about 13% by 2030 at recent rates. An annotation notes that only 3.3% of the ocean is currently fully protected. The graphic emphasizes both significant progress and the large gap remaining to meet global conservation targets.

The fine print, because I'm honest like that: We hit 10% on paper. Only ~3.3% is actually, fully protected. Hitting 30% by 2030 means protecting the ocean ~7x faster than we are now. The line goes up. It needs to go up faster. 👇
Bar chart titled "Protected on Paper vs. Protected in Practice," comparing three measures of ocean protection in 2026 against a dashed line marking the 30% goal. Officially designated: 10%. Fully or highly protected (no-take): 3.3%. Effectiveness assessed and reported: 1.3%. All three bars fall far below the 30% line — showing that the area protected on a map is far larger than the area actually, fully protected.

A cracked smartphone lock screen displays a stack of unread notifications from the Ocean Observatories Initiative spanning 2016 to June 2026. Against a dark ocean-and-lighthouse wallpaper, the notifications chronicle a decade of ocean monitoring: launching 900 sensors, detecting unusual warming in the Irminger Sea, tracking carbon absorption, monitoring El Niño, and recording record ocean temperatures. The final two messages shift in tone: “Hey. We got a letter today. Are you there?” followed by “Ships are coming to take us out of the water now.” At the bottom, a system message reads, “Notifications from this app have been turned off.” The date at the top reads “Tuesday, June 2,” and spiderweb cracks across the screen emphasize a sense of neglect and urgency.

And now for a special World Reef Awareness Day installment of WORLD’S WORST INVESTMENT STRATEGY
Alt text:

A distressed, coffee-stained investment memo lies crumpled on a wooden desk. The document is formatted like an internal government or Wall Street report and is titled “INTERNAL MEMO.” It lists the economic value of coral reefs, including $9.9 trillion in annual ecosystem services, $94 billion per year in coastal protection benefits, and approximately $3.4 billion annually in U.S. fishing, tourism, and storm defense value. The memo notes a federal coral conservation budget of about $33 million per year and an estimated return on investment of roughly 300:1. At the bottom, a large bold recommendation reads, “ELIMINATE THE NOAA CORAL PROGRAM,” accompanied by a red scissors icon, creating an ironic contrast between the reefs’ immense economic benefits and the proposed funding cut.
