How was your bank holiday weekend? I used to work bank holidays so 1: I totally get those who are truly glad it's over 🤗, 2: I REALLY enjoy having the time off! we finished our GIY area, made with recycled wood (some from old shed, some from a skip we passed few weeks ago) + planted up seedlings

I'm bringing a motion to Dublin City Council tonight extending our solidarity to Mayor İmamoğlu of Istanbul. Türkiye is becoming increasingly authoritarian under President Erdogan but Europe & the West is largely turning a blind eye due to Türkiye's strategic importance on migration & NATO

The Lord Mayor and Dublin City Councillors offer their solidarity to the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu, following his arrest and detention as part of a wider campaign to prevent him contesting the Presidential election. We note with deep concern the growing authoritarianism of Turkish rule under President Erdoğan and call on the Irish Government, the EU and the Council of Europe to act within their powers to support free, fair and democratic elections in Türkiye, protect the freedom of the press and the right to protest. In particular, we call for a review of Türkiye's role in the Council of Europe and accession status to the EU in light of recent events.

A-Z of Bogs: M is for… Mire A mire (a term rarely used in Ireland but common in continental Europe) is a peat-forming peatland. Therefore a drained raised bog (ie turbary, post-industrial) is not a mire, but say, a functional blanket bog is. After restoration, a damaged bog can become a mire again.

Excellent letter by Dr. Donal Murphy-Bokern @murphy-bokern.bsky.social in the IFJ this week, rebutting deeply misleading statements previously made on methane by Teagasc's Dr. Laurence Shalloo. ➡️ Farmers are being misled, accounting changes nothing. Cutting livestock methane deeply NOW is required.

Letter by Dr Donal Murphy-Bokern MAgrS, Kroge-Ehrendorf, Germany, published in the Irish Farmers Journal, 1 Feb 2025. The letter is in answer to misleading statements on methane mitigation by Dr Laurence Shalloo who urged the use of the GWP* metric in place of GWP100) in an IFJ article of 25 January 2025.

DM-B article begins:
"It is a simple fact that methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Every tonne of methane emitted causes the same amount of warming regardless of its source. Your article of 25 January (Promised methane move would be ‘big change’ — Teagasc) adds to confusion already caused by the widely promoted but now scientiﬁcally discredited suggestion that GWP“ is an alternative to GWP100 (global warming potential 100) for greenhouse gas accounting.
Unlike GWP100, GWP* does not model the warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, it models the effects of changes in emissions. To use a motoring analogy, GWP100 measures speed while GWP* models the effect of acceleration and deceleration.”

Beach clean day. It's always a pain to disentangle this kind of rope and netting from the seaweed. I met a member of a local clean coasts group on the way home and that made it feel worth it.

Here in Pennsylvania, we had a similar situation over a hundred years ago, when forests all across the state were cut down for logging, etc. Now, though, we have great state parks, state forests, and state game lands where the forests have returned once the land was protected.

I won't lie: after 3 weeks of experiencing almost unimaginably abundant and diverse Costa Rican nature, returning home to the Irish ecological moonscape is a visceral gut punch. But what Costa Rica shows is that it doesn't have to stay like this: nature CAN return. #Rewilding 🌍
