Jarringly funky... reminiscent of Ohio Players (something reminds me Roller Coaster somehow). I don't know why, but this song is putting me on edge, even though I dig the individual elements. Music is weird sometimes. Oh hold on, what is this bass break leading into a piano solo? And bongos? Get it!

Classic joint. Love the upbeat, danceable groove, but paired with lyrics of heart break. Nice dichotomy. What a great band name too... The Ethics. This could/should have been a crossover hit, it's infectious.

The intro and opening rap are comical to me, but the hook is fun and danceable. Classic synth horns that barely sound like horns are always silly, but in 1988 I guess you didn't have many options. I fux with it. Second rap verse is a little better.

The reggae tinged instrumental on this Chaka Khan cover is exquisite, unfortunately the vocals don't keep up (hard when being compared to an all time classic though!). Definitely worth a listen though. The damn clap hits are perfect 😂

Strings is like "let's be serious", pianist is like "I'm a do my thing, yall keep going", bassist is like "I'm just gonna hold it down like I'm supposed to", singer is like "I'm gonna try to impress the ladies here tonight", backup vocalists are like "let us support you all in your endeavors".

Damn, you don't get guitar tone like that no more. If the description is correct, this is presumably Ron Eisley on the vocals. Never heard this one before though. Short and sweet, I tuned in, and it dropped out 😆

I don't know how to describe this, but it's cool. They say New Wave, I guess that fits. Bass is forward and thick though. The pulsy synth during chorus is both haunting and bouncy at the same time. Feels like a muddy autumn turning to a concrete winter.

I love how each hand drum is in a different place in the stereo field. It really makes you feel like you are in the middle of the drum circle. Vocals are sung with passion, as they should be.

Sounds like something I would have expected in like 1980/81. Female vocals are reminiscent of Blondie for me. The bass work is nice throughout the track and the hand drums add a nice layer of texture. I want to sample the lil vocal bit at ~2:50 but probably won't, so feel free to steal the idea, ha.

This track is smooth like peanut butter on warm toast. Singing kinda reminds me of some proto Debarge. Love the slightly wah'd guitar, but every time the horns come in my eyelids close in appreciation. Bass and drums holding the groove like they're supposed to. Overall, a great track to chill to.

This song is amazing to me, in that I can't believe someone heard the master of this and decided that they would spend the money to get it pressed to vinyl. I love that folks were making the music they wanted to make, but not everything that is created needs to be put on a record 😂
