Over an hour had passed before the maids finally showed up with Ikkioi's belongings. When they arrived, Honda went to greet them at the door alone. Three women exited the carriage with the anticipated items. The alchemist knew stuff was missing but there was no point in arguing. He had already picked up his most important papers at the lab when he left so as long as the servant brought him his money purse and at least two change of clothes it would be fine.

"Here is you purse sir" said the woman extending forward a fancy leather bag "The treasury counted, there should be 1200 gold in total split into 1000 gold pieces, 1500 silver pieces and 5000 copper pieces."

"1200 Gold!?" exclaimed the scientist 'My treasure holdings were only 800 gold last I remember"

"Yes. The Emperor left a letter explaining the difference." she replied handing over an envelope

From what the letter said it was clear his majesty had been told a completely different story as to what happened this morning. From the looks of it Nora told him that Ikkioi's press malfunctioned and broke the stone which made the alchemist distraught. She said he than ran away from the lab with Andrei chasing him to come back. As for the extra 400 gold pieces, apparently the emperor made the generous gifts as a sort of investment hoping Ikkioi would make a new healing stone.

From the top of the stairs hidden from view of the house entrance, Andrei had been listening. 1200 gold. His salary was 5 silvers, usually given to him with 50 copper pieces, it was very rare for him to get actual silver coins, let alone golden ones. The alchemist would probably be able to buy a house outright in Rafrella with 500 gold, new alchemic equipment and components could probably fetch up to 200 gold if he went all out which would still leave 500 gold left. Considering Andrei could life off of 3 silvers per month not counting the rent, if the two of them only spent 3 silvers each they could cover over 800 month if his math was right.

It was quiet in the castle, it always was. Ever since Emperor Goro got into power idle chatter in the corridors were as good as banned. Everyone was expected to silently be busy at their tasks and not much else. The rare times they would part their lips to speak it would only be in faint whispers. Even the wind flowing between the leaves sang louder than any of the souls navigating the castle... Aside from the Emperor of course.

"Has the alchemist made any progress as of late" Goro's voice boomed "I was promised a report this month!"

"It's merely the first day of the month your majesty" replied a feeble assistant, respectfully bowing down "I'm sure it's being written as we speak and shall be delivered in the coming days."

"I was told ‘THIS MONTH!" The emperor groaned. "I have waited for way to long already. I need progress or I'll find a new alchemist!"

"I-I hear the royal alchemist was able to heal a mouse with the crystal he has been working on" the assistant stammered "It was only a few days ago. I'm sure Professor Honda is only postponing the report by a couple days to include these findings!"

"A mouse?! Why should I care about a mouse? It's my men would I need this stone for, not the smallest of pest! What is he going to heal with that stone, tiny dagger cuts?" The emperor rubbed his forehead "It took him Two years and a half to make this pebble, am I supposed to wait five more years for him to make one big enough to heal a person?!"

"M-maybe not. With the mouse trial done I'm sure he will start testing on real injuries and perhaps the size of the stone is inconsequential af-"

"You're dismissed. Ill wait until the end of the week to see what comes of it at the very least. If Professor Honda's report manage to sway me I might give him a month to give me real concrete use of the darn thing before I boot him." The noble stood up to look out one of the ornate window

"Understood, I will relay the message right away your highness."

The lab was probably the second or third most noisy room of the palace, the bubbling of the beakers, rattling of the pipes and mutterings of the alchemist could only be rivalled by the cacophony of the royal kitchen or the rumbling of the boiler room. The chamber was a mess. Bottles of various liquids were on every tables, pages with barely legible text were peppered both on the desks and o the floor and there were even cages with whispering animals here and there. In the middle of it all was a man with hair almost as long as he was tall.

"Professor..."

"Yes Heikin?"

"The emperors is waiting for the report" weakly said the assistant to the alchemist"

"I know. I'll have it done soon."

"He said he would only wait a week for it, and one month for human results"

"Hmm?"

"I-if you don't bring anything 'meaningful' he'll have you demoted from royal alchemist to common alchemist and you'll no longer receive funding for your research..."

"Well. that's disappointing to hear" said the blue haired man, his eyes not leaving his research "But I'm confident I should have decent result in a few weeks. The mouse has completely healed with no side effects and I was able to close a decent sized wound on a cat this morning so I think I'm ready to move to human trials."

"Excellent!" the assistant's worries seemed to have faded hearing this. "Should I ask the infirmary to send you someone?"

"No need." Professor Honda finally turned to face his assistant "I want to properly follow up on the cat and monitor it for a day or two first. Plus I want to speak to Nora myself. I think she's still upset she's been stuck on nurse duties alone this whole week. I know she understands that this breakthrough requires me to focus on the stone rather than the patients but I think she's mainly upset that she can't participate in my research as much as she'd like."

"She's upset at more than that if you ask me" said the hall guard standing at the door

"What's that's supposed to mean Mr.Alexeev?"

"Well, her uncle seem to be convinced she should be the new royal alchemist at this point and I have the feeling she's starting to agree" said the brown haired man as he leaned against the wall. "Form her point of view she has been doing most of the work while you're researching..."

"Researching is part of the duties of the royal rank, not just heal people of the court." The alchemist adjusted his pink-lens glasses as he looked back down at his notes

"T-they haven't really seen any results of your research in the past two years" Heikin chimed

"Once they see my report on the mouse and the cat they'll change their mind." the professor retorted confidently.

While the professor sounded a bit harsh and the guard a bit blunt, the two of them had the habit of playfully bantering with one another. Had they not been court employees of vastly different ranks they might have spent some off-time at the tavern together.

"Hope for the best for ya." The guard straightened his back and stretched a little "It'd be a damn shame to see you go."

"You'd miss me that much?" the scientist giggled as he wrote down a couple more notes in his report.

"Don't flatter yourself so much. Guarding the labs is easier and more interesting than the post I used to have at the stables that's all."

"I'm sure it is~"

Playful exchanges over everyone went back to their work: the alchemist sunk his nose back into his studies, his assistant carried samples and paper to and fro on demand and the guard paced the corridor with a watchful eye.

The professor was quite excited about where the healing stone project was heading. He hadn’t been this amped up since the day he first synthesized the first stone fragments over a year ago. Growing and compressing carbon into kinetic gems was nothing new but making one with healing properties was only a theory back then. His current stone had only healed two mild wounds on two small animals, but it was working. It was no longer a theory, it was proven to work.

While he was close to his goal, there was still so much to do ahead of him. After all the data gets solidified he would then have to mass produce the stones on size and ease of use of the stone. If the stone proves to be small and capable of direct application then every soldier could have one in their issued first aid kit but if the stones have to be larger than a fist or require advanced channeling then they would be distributed to the healing alchemist of the infantry as well as the high courts. In an ideal world where he wasn't on such a tight deadline He'd probably spend at least a full year testing out the stone on people but with rumors of conflict brewing at the border of the Hikarikagayaku nation time was of the essence.

Ikkioi used to live in a small village that bordered the cold lands back when it was still called Sverkayusnia. Life was simple back then and for a while the two countries were in good terms. There was even a caravan passing through their town quite often and he became friend with one of the merchant's kids. And then Yakov came into power. Under his rule Sverkayusnia became a war-hungry nation. During that war Professor Honda was still relatively young so he wasn't recruited as a soldier just yet but he became a protector for this village regardless. His little town was completely erased by Sverkat forces and he had to flee to the inner lands of Hikarikagayaku for safety. With how small Hikarikagayaku was back then Sverkayusnia would have probably taken it over had the Huánguó nation not stepped in.

Sverkayusnia doesn't exist anymore, most of its territory has been colonized and force-pacified by Huánguó with a small portion of it having been gifted to Hikarikagayaku. The only part that somewhat remain colloquially called "the cold country" is the small North part of the land that both Huánguó and Hikarikagayaku found too cold to capture. Rumor has it that in recent years the Sverkat living there have been trying to take back their land.

Taking notes and writing his report took him quite a while and was a tad bit tedious but it was necessary. If his writings were not clear enough for the emperor to understand it could mean losing his funding and position. There was probably some things he wouldn't be able to simplify but nothing he wouldn't be able explain it in person if need be.

The alchemist was so busy getting his work done with his assistant to notice his student enter the lab.

"Mr.Honda" flatly said the woman, her arms crossed and her face stern.

"Nora! What brings you down here?" replied Ikkioi

"I've heard news regarding your studies..."

"Your uncle told you, I suppose?" he rhetorically asked, dipping his quill before resuming writing "Do not worry about it. Everything is moving along at reasonable pace!"

"Are you positive?" Her tongue was sharp, there was no doubt she was very much upset "He gave you only a week"

"I'm sure It will be done in the next two days. Don't worry about it!"

"Hmm..."

"By next week we might even start the human trials and I want you involved!" cheerfully said the professor "You are still going to be the head of the infirmary but you will be the one overseeing the patient we will test the stone on while I'll be down here writing the bulk of the reports and doing stone adjustments whenever needed. Speaking of adjustments I think I'll try to put and extra coat of compound on the stone tomorrow to fix the big chip it got when I dropped it yesterday."

"Noted... Looking forward to it."

"Fantastic!"

As the woman left the lab Andrei couldn't help but feel the disgust emanating from her. If Nora and her uncle really wanted her to become the new royal alchemist this was the perfect opportunity, have the report delayed so the emperor would simply get Honda out of the picture. With how diligently she had been working as of late and the fact that Professor Honda had personally taught her his most advanced alchemy she'd be the perfect candidate to replace him.

Mr.Alexeev patiently watched the Alchemist nurse vanish into the darkness of the hallway. He then made his way toward the Professor and tapped on his shoulder.

"What is it?" asked the scholar, not lifting his eyes from his work

"Just make sure you keep your report where you can see it" the guard whispered, not wanting the assistant to hear in case Heikin would tattle.

"You really think she's that mad about all of this? Ikkioi whispered back

"It's my job as a guard to watch people for the smallest hints of scheming so I can intervene before shit happens" Andrei replied with a smirk as he stepped back a little "But maybe you're right… but better safe than sorry!"

"Ill keep that in mind. Thanks for keeping my work safe Mr Big Guard"

"First you flatter yourself, then you flatter me!"

"Well, I think everyone is great and full of potential" Ikkioi warped his arm around his assistant "We're all doing great work here, right Heikin?"

"I-I'm trying my best!"

It was clear Honda and Andrei had quite different views of the current situation: Ikkioi was optimistic and felt like everyone was doing a bagging job despite the occasional friction, Andrei meanwhile saw a much dire scenario where betrayal was afoot. For now only time would tell. All they could do is do their job as flawlessly as possible. Professor Honda would be focused on tidying up his notes for the report and Mr.Alexeev need to make sure no one beside the Alchemist would be touching those papers.

If anything were to happen to Honda's report there wasn't much either of them could do. Not only was Nora just as competent of an alchemist as Ikkioi was, but her uncle had quite the power-pull. Mr.Katashi wasn't just anyone, he was one of the emperor's advisor and ranked far above the castle's medicine man. If Andrei or Ikkioi were to say anything merely implying that him or his niece had any involvement in that report going missing they would have much more to worry about that losing their title and jobs.

It was a long afternoon of work for Ikkioi and by the time the sun had set and his assistant left home for the day he was still deep in his studies. His hands were thoroughly stained with ink and the desk was dotted with various crusted liquids from the day's testing. Only once he felt satisfied enough did he finally step back from his papers and allowed himself a break. He sat down deep into his chair with a heavy yet fulfilled sigh. Next to him on a pike of crates was the dinner the maid had brought him hours prior that had gone cold a long while ago. He took a large bite. Relief washed over him. His research was finally bearing its sweetest fruits and more were to come.

"It's time to get home don't you think?" Asked the guard still at his post.

"Mr.Alexeev?!" The professor jumped, "Isn't your shift over?"

"Should be. My replacement is taking his sweet time getting there."

"Well, maybe if Katashi and Nora are plotting something like you think then perhaps they paid him off to be late so they could waltz in once you left your post" the scholar laughed "They didn't account for you to be a good guard who doesn't leave his spot unattended."

"Maybe" the scar-faced man joked back "I'm too good at my job!"

"You sure are~"

Andrei walked closer and sat on one of the crates. Ikkioi shared a bit of his cold meal as the two laughed for a while longer. They only cut it short once the guard in charge of the night shift finally showed up, 2 hours late. With the new guard on post they finally made their way out to their respective living quarters.

Professor Honda didn't really believe in the guard's conspiracy but decided to be cautious just in case. He ended up taking his in-progress report with him in his room and stashed it in the briefcase he had organized all of his most important notes regarding the healing stone research. The case was safely tucked under his bed, only accessible by removing the mattress he would spend the night sleeping on.

Andrei walked into his apartment, his head still foggy from what might just be his overthinking. He couldn't help but feel like he was right. Nora and her uncle just had this palpable air of disgust around them whenever he heard them talk to or about Professor Honda. They were just plotting something, he was sure of it. The opportunity to get rid of Ikkioi was just too good to pass up. Ikkioi did take his report with him for tonight which reassured him a little, but then what? If Katashi and his niece realise they can't get their hand on it to prevent the alchemist from completing it in time then what will they do next?

He let himself fall onto his bed, hitting the sheets with all his exhausted weight. His legs had been sore from standing all day but it took him forcing himself to stop thinking from him to finally notice. Come to think of it, his entire body was tense. Realistically it was only Ikkioi's issue, Andrei could simply stand by and not say a thing. His job wasn't on the line. He could just not get involved…

As he undressed he though about his life right now in his small but satisfying apartment, about the mediocre yet filling food he ate every day. Gone were the day he's have to sleep under bridges to hide from the icy rain and he didn't need to rely on eating snow to stay alive. Not stirring drama by pretending nothing was wrong would guarantee he'd keep this comfortable life. Speaking out however could ruin him. If it was known he had any doubts or even accused influential people such as the advisor and his niece then surely they would throw him to the dungeons.

As he laid in bed his mind kept flipping the two. Either turn a blind eye to keep his conditions of living secure, or be loyal to the alchemist and risk losing everything. Ideally by making sure Ikkioi's work didn't get sabotaged he could keep life going the same has it always had but who was to say Nora and Katashi wouldn't find another way to getting rid of Professor Honda.
