ECHOLOT case studies. 1️⃣ Basque #CulturalHeritageData, coordinated by @ehu.eus. The Basque CH dataset is fragmented and lacks standard identifiers. ECHOLOT will analyse text strings from source catalogues and suggest matching entities, which experts will then validate via the ECHOLOT interface.

ECHOLOT is validated through five real-world case studies, each of which addresses a different cultural heritage-related challenge and demonstrates the project’s impact across the sector.

1️⃣ 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮.

→ Main challenge: The Basque Cultural Heritage dataset landscape is fragmented across the Basque homelands in Spain and France, as well as a widespread diaspora. Collections use incompatible formats, lack standard identifiers and, for data from before the 1980s, lack a common orthography.

→ ECHOLOT's approach: Wikidata entries for Basque persons, organisations, places, events and cultural heritage objects will provide the initial set of identifiers used in the project. These identifiers will then be prepared for integration into the ECHOLOT system. The initial dataset will be expanded and enriched using further datasets. ECHOLOT will then analyse text strings from source catalogues, propose matching entities and rank best candidates. Experts from the case study will then validate the top suggestions via the ECHOLOT interface, enabling the matching algorithm to be refined.

ECHOLOT is part of the Cultural Heritage Cloud, also known as the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (hashtag#ECCCH). This is a European Union initiative that aims to create a shared digital infrastructure connecting hashtag#CulturalHeritage institutions and professionals across the EU.
🎯 The goal is to help cultural heritage institutions, research organisations, professionals, and non-professionals of all sizes manage their digital objects more effectively.

Of course, hashtag#ECHOLOT is not alone. Through hashtag#HorizonEurope, the European Commission has allocated around €110 million to fund innovative projects that contribute to enrich the Cultural Heritage Cloud by developing tools and services to digitise, preserve and valorise Europe’s cultural heritage.
