How is that a good thing for consumers? More control for them more expensive more privacy issues , slower for quick tasks etc

Sure, but imagine all the stuff we used to teach that is now totally irrelevant. Education needs to level up. It will take time.

One problem is assessing improvement. It cannot just be doing more things faster. Maths may offer a way but it is somewhat a narrow oracle.

great thread from terence tao on the openai navier stokes news - on how maths automation diminishes the field. the opacity of AI solutions removes hints to any promising future areas of inquiry, while fear of AI sniping restrains ppl from sharing research mathstodon.xyz/@tao/1172373...

Well, it looks like 2 teams using tons of AI compute, especially OpenAI with billions of tokens, found concurrently 2 different solutions to the same problem. Wouldn't be the first time in engineering/science/maths.

Research is quite balanced: hard to disentangle the occasional use of newer stoves primarily used for pleasure versus the main use of older stoves as the main source of heat. If I replace my fireplace (pleasure), used 10 times a year, with a stove 30 times a year, air quality will still be better.

Yes, France is a highly regulated country, and they do things well generally, but they still allow private entities to plant those matchboxes year after year who have the audacity of asking for subsidies and rely on a first-class public fire service.
