Hi! Quick note: The Onion accidentally posted a stock photo from a vendor with an AI generated image in it. We pulled the post down once we found that out. Our commitment to not using AI is very real. It's in the union contract to disclose it if we ever do. World is a slop minefield and we're sorry.

Nieman Lab's Predictions for Journalism 2025
Each year, we ask some of the smartest people in journalism and digital media what they think is coming in the next 12 months. Here’s what they had to say.

I was not this smart or collected at age 16 -- perhaps I am not even so at age 37 now. L.W. spoke of wanting to engage with her opposers: “I just don’t understand,” L.W. said. “What’s the worst they can say to me? I’ve heard it all.”

As a rule of thumb, I don't engage in grave dancing -- I think it's bad karma. However, this piece raises some really smart and timely points, tying the reactions to Brian Thompson's murder to the celebratory posts we saw when Henry Kissinger passed last year.

I’ve always loved this so much about New York. 9/11 can happen and everyone will still be lile “well, time for egg and cheese sandwich”
knew which door Mr. Thompson was going to enter and shot him several times from mere feet away, then fled. The gunman, the people said, ran, jumped on a bicycle and pedaled away.
Just after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, yellow caution tape closed off the section of West 54th Street just outside the hotel entrance.
Inside, the morning continued as usual, with guests ordering coffee and arriving with luggage.
The only sign of trouble was a small group of police officers huddled in front of a check-in sign for the conference.

A thing that worries me is while so many are transitioning away from X, is we will see our communities and infrastructure designed and iterated upon by those who rushed in and started talking loudly. How can we make space for those who build community differently, with inclusion and intention?

Please stop trying to make Single Person Verification Systems a thing. One person = one pov. This means bias (His) is already influencing the final product of whom “He” knows and doesn’t know, finds interesting or doesn’t. This is a dangerous game and Bluesky should take note, not jump into bed.

Currently stuck in a special circle of hell where Delta bounces us to Korean Air, then Korean bounces us back to Delta. All we want to do is give someone some money to upgrade our seats….. on the upside, we’re no longer bound to a 75-min layover in ATL (least fave airport!!), instead straight to JFK

Honestly, I think anyone doing tourism in Bali should have to do some eco-add ons just to explore and learn. We planted 19 mangroves today (Jake’s second mangrove planting of our trip!!)
A tall man with longish hair and a black baseball cap bends down in sandy mud to plant a mangrove seedling. Our local guide, in an orange shirt and tan hat, uses a stick to create holes in the sand for the mangrove seedlings. Another hand points to the hole. A mangrove seedling

From a journalism perspective, non-white journalists in supposedly liberal outlets tried to diversify our newsrooms, push for marginalized people to be heard and treated seriously, and to reach out to young people. Instead, black and POC journos were sidelined and/or laid off.

I'm beginning to think that we should stop calling it disinformation and start calling it what it really is: propaganda. The right has had nearly a decade (longer, but in its current iteration) of spreading propaganda, and the left has to figure out how the fuck to undo/combat it.
