I'm not doing it again. He makes the choices for his life & those choices make me angry, but being angry isn't helping him or me. Being angry has no effect on him & it eats at my mental health & happiness. I hate that I'm at this point in the story, but it's where I need to be in order to stay sane.

I have to accept that. Not everyone takes therapy or substance use treatment seriously. & again, I'm concerned that if he's still not taking any of it seriously, I fear he never will. But I also refuse to spend all of my time feeling sad or just waiting for him to die. I've been there before.

Today I realized that some of the anger I'm feeling is because I was projecting what I wanted my brother to get out of therapy & treatment, not what he wanted. I'm also mad that it wasn't what he wanted. He was just going through the motions instead of actually working on his maladaptive behaviors.

it's not going to help. In the same way that you'll get nothing out of "regular" therapy, you'll get nothing out of therapy that focuses on addiction. My brother has been lucky & privileged enough to have access to every option available for AUD. He relapsed because he wasn't ready to do the work.

The US does not have universal healthcare— & even if it did, there is no system to catch people dealing with AUD. It is a privilege to get into a rehab facility or comprehensive program (if you are even able to find one). & if you are able to get into one, if you're not ready to do the work,

AA deals with AUD as a moral failing— not as a maladaptive behavior to cope with pain or trauma or as the neurological disorder that it is widely accepted to be. AA cloaks itself as a cure all & we as a society let it be that, because WE don't want to deal with people who are living with addiction.

One of the reasons that AA fails is because it deals with AUD by pushing abstinence, admitting powerlessness, & asking for forgiveness for your words & actions. But there is no focus on doing the work to figure out or fix why a person developed AUD as a coping mechanism in the first place.
