This morning is one of my favourite sessions to teach - postgrad hist of tech seminar on domestic technologies. So much fun to talk tech and kitchens, industrial design, food prep, cleanliness, consumerism, craft and hobbies, feminism and gendered work, energy use, and the list goes on...

On way to conference sessions in Berlin walked through Bebelplatz. There's a plaque reminding us this is where the Nazi burned books containing scientific and scholarly knowledge they didn't agree with. I wish this was not relevant to our contemporary situation.

In one class this week I will be talking about the weird, weird world of US direct-to-consumer pharma ads for my UK students. Such an accepted background part of US life to have the tv shouting stats and happy patients at us, but to folks from elsewhere they are just utterly insane.

Well Gates should, partly for moral reasons and partly just to enjoy pissing off the other guys. But this is a national moral responsibility that shouldn't be shuffled off to the private sector/NGOs.
