Drake George had a quick 1-2-3 inning yesterday. 2024 draft pick, had a strong season for San Jose in 2025 before undergoing elbow surgery. Flashed 3000 spin slider. R5 eligible in 2027.

When you look up guys who've thrown similar 4-seamers to the one he showed Monday (96≤x<99, ≤15" ivb, ≥12" horz, 5.8'-6.1' vrel), you see a bunch of guys who throw a good number of sinkers. That's kind of where I see the Giants going next

Miguel Mendez got the start for the Scorpions yesterday (who do not have a game today). Sat 96-97 MPH across two innings (a couple of those FB were mis-classified as CH), struck out three. SL had a range of velo and movement

105/49 right down the line of a 342 ft distance is very possible to have been a HR. Most of those balls go to CF, this one is a rarity that got dead pulled (notice that 2B in the RF corner)

While the Padres did make the NLCS with Soto and did manage to get King and Thorpe->Cease from NYY, we gotta talk about what they gave to Washington because good lord

Mahle ended up as 1 of 8 free agent pitchers to put up a 2 fWAR season 1.2 of that was in Atlanta, where they raised his splitter usage to 36-38%. But they still threw a dart on a good target.

It's mostly the rise in cutter usage when the pitch has a .374 wOBA against and 22.9% whiff%, although he really shouldn't be using that four-seamer to righties as much as he is

Baggs dropped Itoh's name the other day (www.nytimes.com/athletic/754...), Giants have been scouting him. Pitch data from 2026 WBC Good carry from a 5.5' release, meh changeup, average-ish slider. Think he profiles as a #5 starter/reliever. Imanaga, for comp, sat 94.5 with 22" vert in the 2023 WBC

I wonder if something happened around May 2026 that potentially caused some kind of shift in pitch usage

And that's where I would question the bullpen deployment. Because, sure, the Giants don't have a good bullpen. But their firemen for most of the season have been the guys who weren't getting shutdowns. Winn and Gage sub-19% K%! As if they were planning on saving their better arms for later.

Wilkinson is R5 eligible and likely would have been protected anyway, so might as well give him a shot. Fastball plays well above its velo thanks to extreme approach angles but the secondaries are very rough. I'd expect 2-3 inning spurts, presumably opening for Houser.

Mayer saw 9 breaking balls today and whiffed at 6 of them on 7 swings. Problem with putting much stock into a string of hits at 3000 foot altitude is that he'd spent basically his entire MiLB career mashing against bad fastballs

I suppose this isn't new but this idea that they'd hire someone with "considerable GM experience" to do all the work while Posey is the familiar face that gets showered with credit and praise is laughable. And then they ended up with someone that Posey even admitted wasn't on his radar.

Giants traded their two relievers who could reliably get shutdowns, now they're left with Winn/Smith/Hentges trying to get leverage outs. Between those three, 22 SD and 20 MD. Bleak.

Trent Harris looked like he might've been a leverage reliever at one point but it later became clear that his cutter wasn't good enough. So he added a sinker, which he throws at the same velo, similar vert, and nearly 12" horz difference. Plus CB, SW has gotten better recently.

Marty Gair is a stuff monster with extremely suspect command. Sits 97.9 MPH (t102.2) on a plus-carry FB with plus extension. Can whip off a sweeper that's a little slow for my liking Get him to live more at the top of the zone, develop feel for a breaker, he's a high leverage RP

Ramon Marquez is the prize of the deal. He will be a popular Pick To Click next year on the back of showing improved velo and an elite whiff-generating changeup. At present, he'll get a lot of whiffs but needs to be able to limit damage down the road. Turns 21 in September.

Distinctly different shape. Looks like -1 MPH off the 4-seam, still plenty of separation off the CH. Could be a weapon vs LHB and something he's needed to add for a while (only 3 of the 7 thrown today were to a LHB)

Low slots in general have been a problem. Adames, Schmitt, and Gilbert are the only ones with consistent playing time who have a better xwOBA vs low slot than high slot As a team: .409 xSLG, .313 xwOBA vs high slot pitchers .390 xSLG, .305 xwOBA vs low slot pitchers

Giants LHB have mostly held their own against LHP with an arm angle ≥33º (high slot), but have been tragically bad against LHP with an arm angle ≤33º (low slot)
