Anish Kapoor on the South Bank in The Observer: "It is extraordinary and touching that this whole edifice was put together to celebrate culture, to give place to it. There was real postwar utopian ambition and a sense we could build anew.”

Taking a pause during the Frome Independent Market to admire a small slice of Somerset brutalism. Formerly Frome Library, now Ellenbray Toys and Stationery. Designed by architect Bill Vallis in the 1960s.

Very good news from @c20cymru.bsky.social. Interesting to see the Arts and Social Sciences Library before the trees grew.

Wow. One of the most joyful, imaginative and best gigs I’ve been to in all my long years. David Byrne at Cardiff Arena. And yes, he did play the hits.

I’m three weeks into a very enjoyable Urban Sketching course. Taught by Andy Gray, who is both enthusiastic as well as very good at explaining how to sketch to people like me who haven’t drawn since Art ‘O’ Level. An extra-curricular drawing of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Batheaston

The Grade II listed former Herman Miller Factory on the opposite side of the River Avon in Bath. Built in 1966 for the Bath Furniture Company, which became part of Herman Miller, until the late 90s when it was left vacant and vandalised. It now houses a Lidl and other retailers.

Bath isn’t all Georgian crescents. This is the Grade II listed high-tech Herman Miller Factory. Designed by Terry Farrell & Nicholas Grimshaw in 1976 as the ultimate flexible space. So much so that 40 years later it was transformed from a factory into the Bath Spa University School of Art & Design.

Church of the Good Shepherd, Batheaston. Permission has mistakenly been granted to demolish this rare example of brutalist architecture in Bath. I was invited inside with a group of people who are exploring an alternative future for this empty church.

Wes Anderson Archives at the Design Museum. Do go. It’s very good. If you like him that is. If you don’t, you probably won’t.

BRUTAL Bristol is in the Bristol Post and our exhibition is on today and tomorrow at Sparks, Broadmead. It’s been a busy day - do come along and make it busier.

The revolutionary new MULTIDECK… Thanks to the Bristol Post for this scan of an ad for the opening of Bristol’s iconic Rupert St car park. Due to be demolished for a couple more unimaginative boxes of student accommodation. More photos here: www.eberlin.co.uk/buildings/ru...

“Its significance at the time was in showing that a modern scheme could be as elegant and obsessively crafted as anything Georgian... a bespoke product by Denmark’s answer to Robert Adam, with the design extending right down to the cutlery.” Owen Hatherley St Catherine’s College, Arne Jacobsen

Gradel Quadrangle, New College, Oxford. If only more student accommodation was as unusual and original as this, instead of the bland towers cropping up across Bristol and elsewhere.

Enough brutalism, let’s have some Palladian. A very nice, sunny day in Derbyshire’s Peak District. Here’s Chatsworth. We are pleased to say our offer has been accepted and we hope to exchange late September. Assuming the survey is ok, of course.

Bastion House. Due to be demolished because developers are too obsessed by spreadsheets to bother keeping it. To the right is the post-modernist Alban Gate. Post-modernism was a reaction to the modernist style of its neighbour, but I think they sit well together.

In the foreground, The Museum of London - another post-war building destined for the wrecking ball. In the background, The Barbican - a revered brutalist masterpiece (by some). A wonder of the modern world according to Queen Elizabeth II.
The Museum of London in the foreground and a residential tower of the Barbican in the background. Both examples of brutalist architecture.

The most interesting building in Bath with its quirky mix of styles? A brutalist-like shell with a nod to Georgian proportions, and a post-modernist flourish of glazing starting on the roof and cascading down to the second floor. Who was the architect? Any information gratefully received.

The under-appreciated design details of the Galleries in Broadmead, Bristol. Built 34 years ago in an era of retail optimism. Now due for demolition.
