Oh the whole resolution is crap, I (and Lux) just thought this was an piece of the resolution that was going a bit under the radar, and I was more describing what a *non-shitty* version would look like than providing advice to people who would never take it from me

To some degree but also Hamilton is a really good candidate and Kansas is significantly more college-educated than its typical partisan lean would suggest (sort of the reverse Nevada in that sense)

That being said, a truly just two-state solution would also have to have elements of unity/confederation like an economic union (WB/Gaza not really being particularly economically viable on its own) and border service cooperation (the border lines likely being complicated and producing problems)

eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 20h
(This is another reason I don't really see any way a binational state wouldn't have to have significant power-sharing or confederational aspects, a 50/50 divide with the slightly smaller group having economic/military hegemony is a recipe for disaster in a unitary fully majoritarian system)

Honestly calling it as such also really suggests they don't quite get the demographic situation in the region, even if every single Palestinian refugee returned (highly unlikely) it'd still only be a 60/40 divide, and the 40% would have significantly more economic/potential military power

You really could just say "single democratic state" and be done with it tbh, it feels like they're trying to cram as many pro-Palestine buzzwords into there as possible
120
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 21h
or, you know, just cut the word "Palestinian," because "single democratic state in all of historic Palestine" is a perfectly fine phrase for what you're proposing too!
130
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 21h
Just because "Palestine" was a neutral term in 1947 does not mean that it is *still* a neutral term! "Palestinian" now means a specific ethnic group, if you don't want to use "Israeli" you could say "democratic state for Jews and Palestinians" and that would work just as well

People underestimate the degree to which COVID basically had the perfect qualities for global spread (iirc coronaviruses were generally considered the most likely next global pandemic among virologists)
040
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 23h
(By contrast COVID was basically unstoppable the moment it broke contain because of the long incubation period + asymptomatic (or low-symptomatic) spread + being a virus vs. bacteria like this)

Russia in fact does not want a plague (in this case it's actually pneumonic, which is a bit more severe than bubonic) outbreak any more than the rest of the world does, and they appear to have taken the correct quarantine measures to contain it

(and also these people's information environment is so fucked and their bigotry so strong they don't realize that the Bad People Cases barely exist and the "reasonable" cases are in fact almost all of them)
010
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 23h
It's the combo of the "we can always tell" attitude and Trump swing voters with immigration: "obviously this will only apply to the Bad People, surely they'll make exceptions for the reasonable cases (whatever I consider to be reasonable)," when actually that isn't how any law in history has worked

Yugoslavia under Tito was probably better in that regard than what came afterwards I suppose

The problem this poses for people like Devine is that you won't get your Grand Victory Where The Libs Bend The Knee, because that's not how winning actually works

And sometimes in regard to say, LGBTQ+ people (an objection I've seen others in this thread reasonably point out), the political disagreement *itself* can be abusive or manifest in abusive ways, but it's the abusive aspect of the disagreement, not the disagreement itself, that justifies cutting off!

Also the first big insurgent candidate is never the one that wins precisely because they tend to have significant uncorrected flaws and the ideas are still fairly new to most people, it's the improved next generation mistakes (AOC/Zohran/etc. + non-leftists taking some leftist ideas) that can win

So if any part of the ball is directly above the upright it's no good

IIRC the NCAA rule is that a ball above the uprights has to be *completely* in between the uprights

I've used this analogy before as someone who feels similarly re: Israel, but at this point sanctions are equivalent to things like taking a friend/family member with addiction's (in this case an addiction to racism/revenge) keys away, it's the only way to save them and their victims from themselves

In terms of the musical theater community, Sondheim is the undisputed GOAT (at least since Rogers & Hammerstein) and the idea that ALW is anywhere near him is correctly considered laughable

There are obviously exceptions to this, but generally large societal disturbances almost always tend to favor reactionary impulses in the short term.

As I've noted before, this kind of action/handling is the difference between being divisive among your country's Jews (Zohran, whose approval with American Jews has increased recently) and being widely despised among your country's Jews (Corbyn eventually hit >85% disapproval with British Jews)

While obviously an unrelated issue, his vote supporting the college sports bill the other day does not inspire confidence on the "chasing the median voter over good principles" front

In addition to them not spending more, there are clear areas where the Cubs' development/approach to players is lagging behind, particularly their weird aversion to reliever velocity

Perhaps the Cubs' issues this season could have something to do with half their pitching staff having body parts fall off this season, but I'm no expert

Wow, the gay woman conservative who was constantly told how much of a genius she was by a bunch of straight white dudes is finding out that she is in fact expendable to them? Extraordinary

Well ideally we make it so the writing on the wall is "massive sanctions"

Not to mention the clear bowdlerization (presumably a result of the translator's known devout Catholicism) of Legolas and Gimli, you don't smuggle someone who is just a "friend" into Valinor (see also Bilba's "confirmed bachelor" status, a known euphemism of the translator's era)

And much like Rabin, it's not really clear that Lincoln's Reconstruction would have actually been that radical, but he represented full equality even if he didn't necessarily personally believe in it
0111
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
(I mean if we extend it to civil rights in general, Lincoln to Andrew Johnson and the subsequent betrayal of Reconstruction represented a similar fall)

The thing is that peace won't really require someone who honestly believes in a Palestinian state; de Klerk very much believed in apartheid (and Gerry Adams in republicanism), but saw the writing on the wall and was pragmatic enough to know that peace was (from his perspective) the least bad option

But yeah point is any decline in Hamas support (or moderation from Hamas) is going to require less militant alternatives to gain legitimacy, which requires Israeli concessions

Certainly not defending Schumer, but this feels more of a broader case of "bipartisan elites having absolutely dogshit opinions on this issue" than "Dems capitulating"
160
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I feel like blaming Schumer for something a *majority of the Dem caucus* supported is *under*stating this particular situation's problem a bit

eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Yeah I wouldn't really say I'm anti-Zionist (some degree of autonomy for Jews and Palestinians is probably a good idea, I'm fairly ambivalent in regard to whether it be via 2SS/binational state/etc.), but I *am* pro-"sanctioning the heck out of Israel until they make the necessary concessions"

Brian Scalabrine, who had 3.1 points per game in the NBA, held an event after he retired where he played regular people (some of whom used to play HS/college basketball) in 1-on-1 and he completely annihilated every single participant

(and this is much more a "City/City fans can't claim victimhood" thing than a "Arsenal are morally superior" argument either, even if it's not to the degree City do and we aren't cheating our stadium and uniforms are sponsored by that same government)

eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
(that being said FFP obviously has significant benefits as well, and is probably worth the cementing of the status quo for it helping keep clubs afloat, if anything the biggest problem is it not being enforced *enough* for certain clubs)
000
eb99 @eb99.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yeah, and I think they do have a minor point about FFP punishing ambitious clubs to the benefit of the status quo powers, but they haven't exactly shown much sympathy to other such clubs either, and you lose any moral ground you have when you decide to cheat and profit off a brutal dictatorship

Even many people with more knowledge of how oppression works seem to have issues with fully recognizing that groups can be both oppressor and oppressed, made significantly worse since most western leftists (like most westerners in general) tend to have a *lot* of unexamined cultural Christianity
