That childhood crush thing...

Ahhhh, of course. Thought it was British for some reason.

Who is that and why does it ring a bell?

It's almost as if overpaid, London-dwelling column-writers and think-tank pundits are the people who might be among those most affected by IHT...

Also, it's not a great example... Barnes has said more than once that he only considers himself "English" in a football sense. In every other aspect, he's Jamaican, which is where he was born and raised.

Naughty Mike and naughty Powell for leader? (4,8)

Sorry, Kyle... it's not only been taken away, it's been buried three miles underground never to see the light of day again.

I think we like TOTP more in the rear-view mirror because, if nothing else, it is a great time capsule... what we liked, what we hated, what we wore, what we wanted to wear, etc.

100%... the Indie Chart was a massive source of new music for me. Pretty sure it was where I first heard of House of Love, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth...

Not quite sure why I missed out so many prepositions in my earlier post... but you obviously got the sense!

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Not many 10/10 albums in my collection... but this definitely one. Not single misplaced, extraneous or wasted note.

Yeah, that’s what would freak me out… not the Amalfi Coast but the middle of Rome.

120

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

We flew to Naples, stayed in Positano and took the boat to Amalfi and a tourist bus to Ravello. But we were kind of done after 4 days.

010

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Pop up to Ravello if you can… my favourite part of that coast.

I've moved so many times that I have shed pretty much everything from my pre-30s life apart from books, Leeds Utd stuff and a few bits from school. I have all my iPods, though. They might be worth something soon!

Bicep's new EP is slipped out without much fanfare... but it's a lovely, late-summer comedown thing.

There's an incredible market for stuff middle-aged people regret getting rid of 30-odd years ago...

110

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

A fiver? You seen how much these go for on eBay?

110

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

These had orange foam covers, I seem to recall...

010

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

I mainly used it on trains... particularly the Keighley-Lancaster route in the mid-to-late 80s.

020

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

... and they looked the nuts. Metallic cases, mirrored finishes, compact designs... lovely.

110

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

I distinctly remember playing Jean-Michel Jarre on it a lot... as I was in that phase, but I probably associate it most with Substance, which came out 18 months later.

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

I got this for my 13th birthday. Think it was a fiver more than my dad was prepared to pay... but I somehow got my way. First album played on it? Sparkle in the Rain, I'm pretty sure...

Yeah, the synth-pop hey-dey was as brief as punk, really... 1978-81? There wasn't much after "Don't You Want Me" to get excited about... maybe some bits of Dazzle Ships. By 1983/4, I was into Lloyd Cole and U2 and Simple Minds, which was the gateway to "indie".

110

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

I didn't own any Numan stuff until I reconnected with synth/electronic stuff in the late-1990s, when the indie scene had eaten itself. But I had "Love Needs No Disguise" on a compilation album I got for Xmas and have always loved that... As an 8-9yo in 1981, it was all Ultravox, Human League, OMD.

210

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Had Telekon on earlier... strange album, especially in its original form without its preceding singles. I Am An Agent sounds like a rewritten We Are Glass... which was always one of my favourite Numan songs.

Good to see J-MJ on there… Equinoxe and Magnetic Fields were huge for me.

Those carries from Hamlin-Uele, too… punishing.

Wakefield Trinity. Goodness me. Absolutely astonishing achievement. One of West Yorkshire’s greatest sporting successes, surely. My dad used to go to Belle Vue to watch the great team of the early 60s… not sure anyone in the town thought they’d climb back to the game’s summit. Wonderful.

I tried to go for the ones that felt “first hand” to me… like I discovered them from radio, TV, etc, independent of a friend’s influence.

100

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Yeah, Substance and HFoH could/should have made mine…

100

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Such a brilliant album… but could have also gone for Rubber Soul.

010

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Yeah, I don’t think I need all of the bottom 3… one/two would do. Low Life might be a more indicative taste shaper.

010

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Now, of course I want to tweak… Ride? J&MC? Smiths? NO? Weddoes? Roses? Human League?

My 9… the albums that shaped my taste – all released before I hit 21.

Yeah, her other albums don't feel fully realised in the same way... nice ideas, nice sounds but not quite enough compelling songs (a gripe I have about a lot of contemporary bands/artists). Thanks for the link! Think I've heard it before... or something like it.

100

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Pretty much flawless, isn't it? A slick, luscious and knowing romp through 80s pop, disco and new wave. Adore it.

100

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

I try to keep up with stuff, mainly via Spotify's "Release Radar"... but while there are loads of new songs I like, there aren't many full albums that hold my interest. I also think streaming removes the all-important personal connection to a set of songs that buying a physical product generated.

110

EastStandUpper @eaststandupper.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

What's the most recently released album to make it into your all-time top 20? Based on this month's activity, I reckon one or two these from the last decade (and a bit) might make the cut:

Due for release on October 15 in UK/Ire... was picked up by Dogwoof for distribution earlier this week.
