easter 🐣 @easterkingston.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It’s almost time for Halloween, and it couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time, because friends, I am: terrified. Follow me on Substack to watch me panic about my book’s rapidly approaching release & take a look at some new character art! #sapphicbooks #booksky #indieauthors
“But Easter,” the version of you I’ve invented in my head will say, “You wrote the book. What can, at this point, possibly go wrong?” And the answer the near-fleshlike incarnation of my worst fears that’s been hiding in the darkened corners of my home will give you is this:
“Everything.”

Can I perhaps interest you in an ARC for a chill sapphic holiday romance in these trying times (the height of summer)? #ARCreaders #sapphicbooks #booksky #indieauthors
Seeking sapphic ARC readers for a steamy, laugh-out-loud lesbian romance Zoe Zuydervelt is going to die.

As the new CEO of a controversial biomedical company, Zoe has survived private betrayals, public scandals, and her best friend Alma, trapping her on the wrong side of a Colorado blizzard and leaving her no choice but to spend the holiday with Alma’s family. But what awaits Zoe at her friend’s cozy mountain cabin may be her most perilous predicament yet.

Hanna Kaplan is going to kill her.

Hanna is disarming, fearless, and built like she came straight from the battlefield of Troy. She’s also Alma’s future sister-in-law, meaning she’s off-limits. Terrified to jeopardize the only real family she has for an entanglement bound to end in disaster, Zoe will do whatever it takes to resist the scorching chemistry between them—even if that means murdering Santa, playing laser tag with Jesus, and wrangling herself into a range of increasingly ridiculous outfits.

A steamy, laugh-out-loud lesbian romance about being brave enough to choose a life actually worth living.
A Most Wonderful Time ARC campaign details

if you ever wondered why proof copies are a thing… ✅
A picture of the proof copy of my upcoming novel, taken from the side so the colorful page markers are showing where I still need to make edits. There’s dozens of them, often multiple markers on one page.

Look, everyone’s entitled to their opinion on #TheOdyssey, whether it’s Nolan’s movie, the delightful article #EmilyWilson wrote about it or the ancient tale itself, but we can all agree that me & my knitted-slippered stage son are the BEST Penelope and Telemachus to ever grace your screen, right?

How houseplants, fandom and controlled demolition helped me become a writer again. The link to the full story is in my bio! #sapphic #lesfic #lesbian #indieauthor #lesficauthor
Bold white text on a deep pink to light blue background textured with plant leaves. The text is a quote from easterkingston’s Substack article that reads, “I discovered the one living thing that truly never sleeps: a fandom for a non-canon sapphic pairing on a show that had potential but consistently dropped the ball.”

Last round of (line & copy) edits is DONE! Next up: finalizing my cover design. I’m glad I decided to do the artwork myself, because it turns out I’m the most difficult client I have ever had.
Close-up of a thick stack of papers held together with binder clips. The name EASTER KINGSTON is visible on the top page. A pencil with a detachable pink eraser tip obscures the title of the manuscript.

I have been working on an adaptation of You & Me & Holiday Wine, and will be publishing it this fall as a chunky, feel-good, sapphic romantic comedy. This means I’ll have to take the fic off of ao3. If you’d like to hear my heart breaking about it, come visit me @ easterkingston.substack.com!

throwback to when i said something on twitter and then made a little graph about it #fanfiction vs #foefiction
a twitter post by easterkingston (me) saying "the term ‘fan’ fiction assumes an unequivocally positive attitude toward the source material. what a lot of us are writing should technically be classified as foe fiction," followed by a graphic illustrating the desire to write transformative fiction is greatest when the author either loves (fan fiction) or loathes (foe fiction) the source material

#supercorp as a tragedy told in… four hands
a digital painting hand drawn by easter kingston, showing Lena Luthor and Supergirl from the chest up, maintaining an intimate though clearly conflicted embrace. They’re both facing the viewer, with Kara holding Lena from behind, her left arm slung around Lena’s chest while using the right to cover Lena’s eyes with her hand. Lena’s face is in the light, though most of her face is covered by Kara gently keeping her in the dark; her posture is relaxed, trusting, her jaw slack, her hair down, while Supergirl’s face is partially hidden in shadows, her expression deeply troubled. The hand Supergirl/Kara rests just beneath Lena’s collarbone is only barely stretching the collar of Lena’s sweater, one fingertip dipping beneath. Lena’s right hand lies just over/hovers just above Kara’s right hand, a wish more than a demand. Her left hand however is clutching Supergirl’s forearm, as if frightened she will pull away.

SPREAD THE WORD. 3/3 #fanfiction
Weitzman briefly took down word-stream after author outcry—only for the same website and app to resurface late February 2025 as booktokapp.com.

(Two screenshots, side by side, one showing word-stream.com’s main page on the internet archive, dated December 2024, the other showing booktokapp.com’s main page as it looks today. They’re carbon copies, save for the particular works listed: all of them appear to be freely available as part of the public domain.)

the sites are identical, though booktokapp no longer lists the stolen works—at least for now.although the BookTok app doesn't appear to be offering fanfiction at this time, its store page still lists it as one of its major draws.

and although Weitzman now hides behind an Inc. to obscure this app's connection to Speechify®, BookTok's Privacy Policy still refers back to word-stream.

(A screenshot of BookTok’s website: [quote]‘If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, You can contact us:
• By email: support@word-stream.com’[end quote]it looks an awful lot like Speechify and BookTok are asking you to violate indie authors' copyright for them.

WARN YOUR FRIENDS. 2/3 #indieauthors
Speechify®’s Terms & Conditions state that, by submitting material to their platform, you assert you own the rights to it.
A screenshot of Speechify’s website, with the following text highlighted:
[quote]‘7.6 Each time you submit User Material to us, you represent and warrant to us as follows:
(a) You own your User Material or have the right to submit it, and in submitting it you will not be infringing any rights of any third party, including intellectual property rights (such as copyright (…)’[end quote]

An arrow points to a second screenshotted paragraph, with the remark ‘<-this one's also interesting. especially for our kinkier nerds’ in a handwritten font:

[quote](b) Your User Material is not illegal, obscene, defamatory, threatening, pornographic, (…) or is otherwise deemed inappropriate.’ [end quote]

it also states that, by using their platform, you grant Speechify® the right to publish and exploit this material—or any ideas contained within—in essentially any way the company wants.

[quote]“7.8 (…) by submitting User Material you hereby grant Speechify an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty free, worldwide license to use, telecast, copy, perform, display, edit, distribute and otherwise exploit the User Material you post on the Services, or any portion thereof, and any ideas, concepts, or know-how contained therein, with or without attribution, and without the requirement of any permission from or payment to you or to any other person or entity, in any manner (including, without limitation, for commercial, publicity, trade, promotional, or advertising purposes) and in any and all media now known or hereafter devised, and to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Material, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing without any payment of money or any other form of consideration to you or to any third party. (…)”[end quote]which, of course, in this day & age-what else is new, right? many services require you to sign off on conditions that seem predatory at a passing glance!
Speechify®'s CEO has ALREADY TAKEN independently published works without the authors' permission. and he's sold them, word for word, on a different platform—as AI-narrated ‘audiobooks'. (A badly drawn emoji with dead eyes and its tongue lolling from its mouth.)in December 2024 Speechify® CEO Cliff Weitzman launched a website & app called word-stream.
he used this platform to host thousands of fanworks and independently published books without informing the authors, monetizing them for the benefit of his company.A screenshot of a tumblr message posted by someone with the username @cliffweitzman:
[quote]cliffweitzman replied to your text post
“Hey everybody, the person behind word stream here: (…) Word Stream is free for anyone to use. There is a paid plan for ppl who want to use high quality text to speech which is priced at the minimum amount we can to cover server/gpu costs to power the text to speech. The next iteration will also include free text to speech but with a lower quality bar. (…) Please email me if we have a peace of work that is yours you don't want up there and I will take it down immediately (…) A future release will also add the ability to tip authors so writers can make money not from selling the works but via tips from grateful readers (…) I apologize for a beta product that got more attention that it had any right to before it was complete (…) Warmly, Cliff”[end quote]

Weitzman maintains to this day that he sees nothing wrong with monetizing work authored by others without their permission, as long as we don't personally & explicitly tell him that we don't want him to.

(A bad drawing of a small stick figure looking up at a tall stick figure. The small figure says “please don't steal our work, Cliff!” The tall figure, depicted with a yellow halo, responds “alright, I won’t steal YOURS. because YOU ASKED so nicely.”)

STEAL THIS THREAD. 1/3 #Speechify
White and yellow text on a black background, reading: it's time to stop using Speechify® to read fanfiction and self-published (or not-yet-published!) work. (there’s a pink thread emoji, and an arrow pointing down, asking you to) please allow me to explain how using Speechify® harms indie and fanfiction authors.

here’s to not letting go of hope, courage and creativity
A digital painting by ekingston, made originally for Broads and Broadswords charity zine. A young Black girl with natural hair is sitting cross legged on a library floor. She’s wearing round glasses, a bright yellow T-shirt, blue jeans rolled at the ankles and hot pink sneakers. On either side of her are shelves of large, thick books. One book is open in her lap. The girl is staring, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, as she pulls a large sword from between its yellowed pages. It’s sparkling with magic.

@heatherhogan.bsky.social I’m really sorry about tagging you in on this, but I’m hoping you may want to help give this issue more visibility since your wife’s Killing Eve fic was one of the works that was stolen. Latest update on the situation is here: www.tumblr.com/ekingston/77...
