One year ago, our research exposing how the US RV industry is using Indonesian plywood sourced from the destruction of Borneo's forests was featured in @nytimes.com. But last month, the US exempted Indonesian lauan plywood from a new 10% tariff after lobbying by the RV Industry Association.

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court will decide the future of the Amazonian Soy Moratorium – the most effective voluntary zero-deforestation agreement.🌳 If abandoned, it could lead to 1.4m extra hectares of Amazon forest loss by 2036.‼️ The ruling has global implications for tackling deforestation.

📢 A new study from Cornell University & New York University debunks leather tanneries’ claims that their sector has no direct impact on deforestation. Researchers found hides make up 8% of a cow’s value at the slaughterhouse level – which can be instrumental to profitability when margins are tight.

The EU Commission is proposing to add language specifically excluding ‘waste’ palm oil from the scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation, according to a draft leaked last week. This would see more than ¼ of all palm oil imports to the EU from Indonesia and Malaysia exempt from the #EUDR.

Cowhides used to make EU leather are produced at the expense of some of the most biodiverse places on earth and the communities that depend on them. 🌍 But instead of making sure its leather is sustainable & ethically produced, European tanneries have lobbied against regulations to make this happen.

The Commission is ignoring evidence linking EU leather imports to deforestation. 🤯 The inconsistency is stark: beef from deforested land would be banned but hides from the same animal would be allowed. 🐄 The EUDR cannot be weakened any further; companies must prepare for December 2026.

Our latest research supports this: companies are already cutting deforestation-linked timber from supply chains. BUT voluntary action isn’t enough; Forest 500 shows that only 29% of companies have commitments covering all commodities. EUDR gives an incentive to drive real change.
