Nestle just signed its largest ever branding deal w the NBA & said the quiet part loud — it’s their biggest push yet to hook kids (on junk). No surprises there; an important space to monitor for us studying #CDOH and #M2K. A key example of sport is used as an int’l ambassador for the UPF market

Marketing tactics may not translate to actual health benefits, no kidding! Good use of available data, but unsure abt method for comparing within-cat items w & w/o claims. Some cats are VERY broad (eg bevs), so diffs likely have many causes. Cannot find enough detail on how this was addressed…

Wait this fantastically asinine. Like the most demonstrably incorrect statement that could be made on the topic. Yikes. Did they…google her??

The GRAS loophole lets food companies add untested chemicals to your food without telling the FDA. RFK Jr talks a big game about closing it, but you can’t fix a regulatory void while gutting the agency meant to fill it. @gfriedman.bsky.social @medpagetoday.com www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/seco...

"Our food systems can be re-designed to benefit more people, and that would require more than just individual behaviour change." Thank you to @adamfwalsh.bsky.social for inviting me to discuss #ultraprocessedfoods and leading a thoughtful conversation 🎙️ www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

Emergence of “non-UPF” label almost comically inevitable, as discussed here👇. Yes I know we can get into the weeds of nutrients vs processing, but that need not drown out a critical point: labelling can be an important public health intervention or a great way to increase profits. Rarely both.

Health halo yes - & we’ve seen that for ages as of course you’ve reported. Something that interests our research group is the potential industry push for *more* novel labels as a way to clutter & dilute potential effect of those known to actually improve health behaviours (ie nutrient warnings)

last year I wrote w hope that momentum in the #ultraprocessedfood world would translate to impactful #publichealth policy from the US. See below for my reflection in @medpagetoday.com about how things actually panned out... @gfriedman.bsky.social www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/seco...

The ECE Beverage Collective is a data-sharing agreement among researchers who have collected #dietaryintake data in childcare w direct observation methods. The collective is a proof-of-concept that these agreements can optimize precision & statistical power to improve our #policyresearch
