I need you to understand this is living history, that racism is at the root of everything that this country is founded upon; not a need for religious freedom; a need to belong to the mother country by taking and "owning" land. I need you to understand nothing changes here until this does.

10. If anything, all it's done is desensitize us all to the horrors of genocidal violence. We watch Palestinians die like we're watching sports. So how fitting is it that America wants to showcase the execution of a Palestinian to the country as a whole. I mean....he "deserves it right?" end/

9. But it's always been there. The thirst for blood. We've merely had to wait for the last generation who remembers the horrors of intimate violence on a massive scale. They're gone. And America wants blood again. Watching the genocide of Gaza in 4K hasn't quelled that dark desire

8. In the belief of perpetual progress, we like to believe that America has gotten past it's barbaric past of chattel slavery, race massacres, lynchings, death penalties....but that couldn't be further from the truth. America exported it violence abroad, and concealed its violence here

7. The reason this is significant is because Abel Meeropol, the man who wrote Strange Fruit after the lynchings in Indiana, ended up adopting the sons of the Rosenbergs after their executions. Michael and Robert Meeropol (the sons) are still alive btw.
A screenshot from. The Atlantic which displays a family, including Michael and Robert Rosenberg, sstanding in front of the Wbite House.

the caption reads:

THE ROSENBERG BOYS
When Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were executed by the US government, they left behind two sons, ages 6 and 10. All these years later, Robby and Michael are still trying to make sense of what happened.

6. Believe it or not, the story becomes even more strange after this. A little over a dozen years later, after WWII, two American citizens were executed by the federal government for espionage. The only two ever executed for such charges in American history. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg

5. After crafting the song, he found a young singer named Billie Holiday whom he wanted to sing the dangerous song. It would become her defining song. And the song that ultimately got her killed. "Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root..."

4. The photo, taken by Lawrence Beitler, became one of the most recognized scenes of a public lynching. Several years later, a teacher and songwriter named Abel Meeropol, came across the horrendous photo and he wrote a poem entitled "Bitter Fruit." He later set the poem to music....

3. This occured in Marion, Indiana. The mob, which easily numbered in the several thousand, severely beat the three boys, and lynched Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. Somehow 16yr old Cameron was able to escape with his life. They brutalized their bodies and took "souvenirs."

2. August 7, 1930. Three teenagers; Thomas Shipp 18, Abram Smith 19, and James Cameron 16, were three Black boys accused of murder, robbery, and SA. But before even getting a trial, a large white mob broke into the jail they were held to lynch them. But this wasn't the South

You know what....let's talk about this "infamous" photo, before the spirit of typing leaves me. I think it's relevant considering the news from the Pentagon we just got This is the scene of what's considered the "last public lynching." And it's legacy is quite long. 🧵

Dear Clarence Thomas, THIS....is what you could correctly classify as a "high-tech lynching."
An old post-card of a lynching scene. With crowds enjoying it like a festival.
