Wondering if trials bikes are allowed anywhere on access land, specifically the delicate path to the top of South Head, Chinley. @peakdistrict.bsky.social @cbtransportgroup.bsky.social @nationaltrust.org.uk

New urban projects like IBA Landgut and Sonnwendviertel comprise medium-rise apartment blocks with social housing complementing the existing city, neither 14 homes per hectare car-dependent sprawl nor 15+ storey vanity projects. So the city has a spatial CONTINUITY.

...50-60% live in social housing, much of it public ownership, partly an enduring legacy of Red Vienna, cities within a city.

80% of Vienna lives in rented flats, centrally these are 19C ~6 storey urban city (originally “mietkaserne” or “zinshäuser”) blocks with neo-classical palazzo street facades...

Beyond the Ring, Vienna’s suburbs are full of interest and imagination: urban villas like the Villa Beer (1929-31 Frank+Wlach), public housing projects like the Werkbundsiedlung (1929-32 Frank, Haring, Hoffmann, Loos, Rietveld, Lurcat, etc) and...

The city has started work on humanizing the Ring, in consultation with Gehl. The Ring is a legacy of the old fortification glacis, given monumental buildings in the 19C and like many grabbed by the highway engineer in the 20C. The plans look very positive for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Cycle infra otherwise in the city appears patchy, with vehicle priority, worn out painted lanes, and a profusion of “stroads”. There are many stats about how extensive the cycling network is, but this cyclist found it sketchy at times. (Streetview pics).

The R1 Donauweg cycle route along the Danube, even with ferry crossings, is well surfaced, effective and popular with people of all ages, at least the bit I did from Passau. No Trans Pennine Trail style “regeneration” diversion opportunities are necessary here.

Favoriten, a district S of the centre, is implementing Supergratzl, a version of the Barcelona Superblock, strictly limiting through traffic, giving more space to people with play areas, seating and planting.

City squares regularly have underground parking below. G Cochplatz 319 spaces, Freyungplatz 577 spaces. Great to get cars out of the way because the surface can become people and planting, though not necessarily the ideal mobility solution. Michaelerplatz is one of the city centre walking hubs.

Straightforward projects for improving urban comfort / walkability abound, with suds planting, trees and seating replacing car parking.

When the population are consulted, they favour giving space to people rather than cars. 10,000 were consulted on Argentinierstrasse to give cyclists priority for a calmer, safer street. Asphalt is replaced with permeable surface and paving and 70 trees make an urban corridor.

The IKEA atrium bringing daylight into the lower floors has breakout modules for figuring out your kitchen unit layout. A rooftop terrace has views over the city.

PT is so good that IKEA feel able build a store with no car park. "Around two-thirds of Viennese people living in the inner-city districts of Vienna do not even have a car anymore. They come by public transport, walk, ride bicycles or take a scooter." IKEA

Viennese whirl, a look at urban comfort. Vienna metropolitan region has a population of 3m, same as Greater Manchester. A comparison of their tram and subway networks gives a good snapshot of PT provision in each city. 🧵(15)

The four ceramic figures at KMH by Josef Franz Riedl (Physical Culture - Liberation - Education - Child Welfare) overlook 12.-Februar-Platz, a pleasant green space above a 200-space underground car park. Just one of several treed courtyards.

Two Red Vienna housing estates: Engelsplatz and Karl-Marx-Hof. Built with public baths, shops, cafes bars, surgeries, kindergartens, support centres, libraries, workshops, etc. But hmmm, try getting a coffee today - a small cafe is tucked inside a (privately run) squash club behind the KMH museum. 🧵

Wondering why #hmgov introduced this rule? No promotion, anecdotally police know nothing about it, drivers don't know or don't care, and it's trumped by the design of our highways.

Frame is up and looks great, if conventionally shed-like, and shame to put (aluminium?) cladding on it. Wondering if the £4.4m grant represents the e.o. contractors charge for timber over steel frame.

Sad to miss MSA sketch-athon Friday, but here’s 4 of Ancoats. One is from 1826 by KF Schinkel, appalled by our Northern working conditions. Coming from Berlin, now pledged to DOUBLE its 440,000 tree count by 2040, what would a 21C Schinkel would make of our barren Great Ancoats Street?

Much improved Gordon St / Gordon St at UCL. Strident road markings, planting, seating, breakout space for cafes and meetings which on a Friday lunch was clearly popular. Oddly though it all looks a bit reversible - even the zebra crossing is still there - heritage legacy installation?
